== History ==
A policy of the [Asante Empire](/source/Asante_Empire) was to resettle some of the population of an occupied territory across their loyal regions. In October 1817, Fante refugee families were resettled in Bremang to build a new village.<ref>{{harvp|Wilks|1975|p=84}}</ref> As part of a new [town plan](/source/town_plan) in 1817, [Asantehene](/source/Asantehene) [Osei Bonsu](/source/Osei_Bonsu) had labourers construct a wide and straight street from Kumasi to Bremang which was the location of his [country seat](/source/country_seat).<ref>{{harvp|Wilks|1975|p=375}}</ref> In 1883, Asante was drawn into a [constitutional crisis](/source/constitutional_crisis) where Bremang and Kumasi served as the seat of two rulers elected as Asantehene by opposing state institutions. The [Asantemanhyiamu](/source/Political_systems_of_the_Ashanti_Empire) elected former Asantehene [Kofi Kakari](/source/Kofi_Kakari) in Bremang while the [Inner Council](/source/Political_systems_of_the_Ashanti_Empire) chose [Kwaku Dua Kuma](/source/Kwaku_Dua_II) in Kumasi.<ref>{{harvp|Wilks|1975|pp=540–543}}</ref>
