It is located mostly in [Gloppen Municipality](/source/Gloppen_Municipality), but the southern end of the lake lies in [Sunnfjord Municipality](/source/Sunnfjord_Municipality). At {{convert|22.67|km2}}, it is the largest lake in Gloppen (followed by the lake [Eimhjellevatnet](/source/Eimhjellevatnet)). The [European route E39](/source/European_route_E39) highway runs along the north end of the lake, connecting the two nearby areas of [Sandane](/source/Sandane) and [Byrkjelo](/source/Byrkjelo). On the shores of the {{convert|17|km|adj=on}} long lake lie several villages including [Re](/source/Re%2C_Vestland) and [Kandal](/source/Kandal%2C_Norway). The lake flows into the Gloppenelva river which flows into the [Gloppefjorden](/source/Gloppefjorden), an arm of the [Nordfjorden](/source/Nordfjorden_(Vestland)).
