# Bregana

**Bregana** (brɛɡǎna; German: *Bergana*)[1] is a settlement ([naselje](/source/Naselje)) that is part of the town of [Samobor](/source/Samobor), [Zagreb County](/source/Zagreb_County), [Croatia](/source/Croatia). According to the [2001 census](/source/2001_Croatian_census), the town has 2,518 residents[2] living in an area of 2.81 square kilometers (1.08 sq mi).[3] Together with the nearby settlements of [Podvrh](/source/Podvrh,_Croatia) and [Klokočevec Samoborski](/source/Kloko%C4%8Devec_Samoborski), the town's micropolitan area has 3,450 inhabitants.[2]

Together with [Macelj](/source/Macelj) and [Rupa](/source/Rupa,_Croatia), Bregana used to be the main [Croatian](/source/Croatia) border crossing with [Slovenia](/source/Slovenia), before Croatia joined [Schengen](/source/Schengen_Area) in 2023. The checkpoint on the Slovenian side of the border was located in a small village called [Obrežje](/source/Obre%C5%BEje). It is the start of the [A3 highway](/source/A3_(Croatia)) which goes to [Zagreb](/source/Zagreb) and on to [Lipovac](/source/Lipovac,_Croatia) on the [Serbian](/source/Serbia) border in the east. The highway connects to Slovenia's [A2 highway](/source/A2_(Slovenia)), which leads to [Ljubljana](/source/Ljubljana). There was also a minor border crossing in the town itself, a two-lane road crossing between Bregana and [Slovenska Vas](/source/Slovenska_Vas,_Bre%C5%BEice). A railway crossing between the two countries used to be located in [Harmica](/source/Harmica,_Zagreb_County) near [Savski Marof](/source/Savski_Marof) in [Brdovec](/source/Brdovec) municipality.
