The **Bread and Freedom Party** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): حزب العيش والحرية; *Hizb AlEish WaAlHorria*), also translated as the **Bread and Liberty Party**,[3] is a [democratic socialist](/source/Democratic_socialism) party in [Egypt](/source/Egypt) created in November 2013 by former members of the [Socialist Popular Alliance Party](/source/Socialist_Popular_Alliance_Party).

## History

280 members from the Socialist Popular Alliance Party gave their resignations in early November 2013, though the resignations were rejected by [Abdel Ghafar Shukr](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Abdel_Ghafar_Shukr&action=edit&redlink=1), the head of the party.[4] The [Daily News Egypt](/source/Daily_News_Egypt) site gives the number of resigning members as 304.[5] The resigning members criticized their former party for aligning itself with the military during the transitional period and defending the actions of the police.[5] The members formed a new party in response.[6]

The party is not registered as of 10 February 2014.[7]

## Leadership

[Khaled Ali](/source/Khaled_Ali), who was the leader of the party,[8] resigned from it in 2018.[9]
