**Branka** (Sr-cyrl: Бранка) is a [Serbo-Croatian](/source/Serbo-Croatian) female [given name](/source/Given_name) derived from the [Slavic](/source/Slavic_languages) root *bran* – the same as in [Branislav](/source/Branislav) and [Branimir](/source/Branimir) – with the meaning "to defend or protect". It can also be a version of the [Portuguese](/source/Portuguese_language) name *[Branca](/source/Branca)* meaning "white" (*Casablanca* was originally called *Casabranca*). The name *Branka* became popular in the territory of former [Yugoslavia](/source/Socialist_Federal_Republic_of_Yugoslavia) some hundred years ago.
