Berger attended [Beechwood High School](/source/Beechwood_High_School) in [Fort Mitchell, Kentucky](/source/Fort_Mitchell%2C_Kentucky). He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in high school, but went to college at [Eastern Kentucky University](/source/Eastern_Kentucky_University).
