He featured in the [1981 Stanley Cup Finals](/source/1981_Stanley_Cup_Finals) with the [Minnesota North Stars](/source/Minnesota_North_Stars).

After having won the [Memorial Cup](/source/Memorial_Cup) in [1977](/source/1977_Memorial_Cup) as a member of the [New Westminster Bruins](/source/New_Westminster_Bruins), Maxwell was selected seventh overall in the [1977 NHL amateur draft](/source/1977_NHL_amateur_draft) by the [Minnesota North Stars](/source/Minnesota_North_Stars). He stayed with the North Stars throughout the early 1980s, recording 73 points in 78 games in his best season with the club in [1983–84](/source/1983%E2%80%9384_NHL_season). At the end of his career he bounced around between teams, spending short amounts of time with the [Quebec Nordiques](/source/Quebec_Nordiques), [Toronto Maple Leafs](/source/Toronto_Maple_Leafs), [Vancouver Canucks](/source/Vancouver_Canucks) and [New York Rangers](/source/New_York_Rangers), and ultimately retired in [1987](/source/1986%E2%80%9387_NHL_season).
