Ockinga graduated from the [University of Auckland](/source/University_of_Auckland), New Zealand with a BA and an MA, and the [University of Tübingen](/source/University_of_T%C3%BCbingen) Germany, with a PhD. Ockinga specialises in the art and language of the [New Kingdom of Egypt](/source/New_Kingdom_of_Egypt) and has excavated extensively at a variety of locations in Egypt, including [El Mashayikh](/source/Lepidotonpolis) (near [Abydos](/source/Abydos%2C_Egypt)), Awlad Azzaz (near [Sohag](/source/Sohag)), [Dra Abu el-Naga](/source/Dra_Abu_el-Naga), and [Saqqara](/source/Saqqara).
