A '''boxout''' is an approximately [square](/source/Square_(geometry))-shaped design element that contains text or graphics separate from the [main body](/source/Column_(typography)) of text or graphics on the page.<ref>{{cite book |last=Grannell |first=Craig |date=2008 |title=The Essential Guide to CSS and HTML Web Design |url=https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Essential_Guide_to_CSS_and_HTML_Web/3D8nCgAAQBAJ |publisher=[Apress](/source/Apress) |pages=272-276 |isbn=9781430204794 |access-date=December 1, 2025}}</ref> Unlike a [sidebar](/source/Sidebar_(publishing)), a boxout does not need to be a vertical [rectangle](/source/rectangle) along one edge of the page.

Boxouts are very commonly used in magazines, but may also be seen in books and on web pages. The function of a boxout is primarily to hold related information separate from the main essay while retaining some degree of connection. As such, boxouts will often be seen containing things like [glossaries](/source/glossary) and author [biographies](/source/biographies). On web pages they frequently contain [hyperlink](/source/hyperlink)s to related articles. In terms of design, boxouts help to break up the page and make it more visually interesting.
