**Boxley** is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) in the [Maidstone](/source/Maidstone_(borough)) District of [Kent](/source/Kent), England.

It lies below the slope of the [North Downs](/source/North_Downs) approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) northeast of the centre of [Maidstone](/source/Maidstone) town. The civil parish has a population of 7,144 (2001 census), increasing to 9,554 at the 2011 Census,[1] and extends to the north and east of the town including the settlements of Boxley itself, [Grove Green](/source/Grove_Green), most of [Weavering Street](/source/Weavering_Street), [Sandling](/source/Sandling%2C_Maidstone) and the southern extremities of [Walderslade](/source/Walderslade) and [Lordswood](/source/Lordswood%2C_Kent) at the top of [Blue Bell Hill](/source/Blue_Bell_Hill).

The [M2](/source/M2_motorway_(Great_Britain)) and [M20](/source/M20_motorway) motorways cross the parish to the north and south of Boxley village and the [High Speed 1](/source/High_Speed_1) railway line passes to the south in cuttings and tunnel. Despite being so close to Maidstone and two motorways, the village is surrounded by woodland, and still retains a village feel. The ruins of [Boxley Abbey](/source/Boxley_Abbey), in neighbouring [Sandling](/source/Sandling%2C_Maidstone), fall within the parish.

## Notable buildings

The [St Mary and All Saints parish church](/source/St_Mary's_and_All_Saints_Church%2C_Boxley) in Boxley village and the [Abbey Barn](/source/Boxley_Abbey_Barn), in [Sandling](/source/Sandling%2C_Maidstone), are Grade I [listed buildings](/source/Listed_building) and the site of the abbey is a [scheduled monument](/source/Scheduled_monument). Parsonage Farm in Boxley,[2] Boxley Abbey House and St Andrew's Chapel in [Sandling](/source/Sandling%2C_Maidstone), and Weavering Manor in Weavering Street, are all [Grade II* listed](/source/Grade_II*_listed).

The [Pilgrims' Way](/source/Pilgrims'_Way) [trackway](/source/Ancient_trackway) and the [North Downs Way](/source/North_Downs_Way) pass through the parish. Boxley village was used for scenes in the film version of *[Porridge](/source/Porridge_(film))*.

Within the parish are the [Kent Life](/source/Kent_Life) open-air museum, in [Sandling](/source/Sandling%2C_Maidstone), and Vinters Valley [Nature Reserve](/source/Nature_Reserve). A 19th-century [granary](/source/Granary) from Boxley was dismantled and re-erected at [Kent Life](/source/Kent_Life).

"Vinters" was a country house and home to the Whatman family until it was demolished in the 1950s.[3] [Susanna Whatman](/source/Susanna_Whatman) was the first of her family to manage the house and the guide she wrote was published in 1952 - about 200 years after her birth.

[The Maidstone Studios](/source/The_Maidstone_Studios) are located within the parish.
