**Boulby Quarries** ([grid reference](/source/Ordnance_Survey_National_Grid) [NZ745200](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Boulby_Quarries&params=54.569743_N_0.849185_W_region:GB_scale:25000)) is a 40.3 [hectare](/source/Hectare) [geological Site of Special Scientific Interest](/source/Geological_Site_of_Special_Scientific_Interest) in [Redcar and Cleveland](/source/Redcar_and_Cleveland), [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire), England [notified](/source/SSSI_notification) in 1989. It is located close to the coast and the village of [Boulby](/source/Boulby).[1]

In England SSSIs are designated by [Natural England](/source/Natural_England) and Boulby Quarries is one of 18 SSSIs in the [Cleveland area of search](/source/List_of_Sites_of_Special_Scientific_Interest_in_Cleveland).[2] The site is identified as being of national importance in the [Geological Conservation Review](/source/Geological_Conservation_Review).

The quarries are wholly within the [North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=North_Yorkshire_and_Cleveland_Heritage_Coast&action=edit&redlink=1) and partly within the [North York Moors National Park](/source/North_York_Moors_National_Park) and the historic North Riding of Yorkshire.

The fossil content of Boulby Quarry is particularly important with two [plesiosaur](/source/Plesiosaur) species (*[Eretmosaurus macroptera](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eretmosaurus_macroptera&action=edit&redlink=1)* and *[Thaumatosaurus zetlandicus](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thaumatosaurus_zetlandicus&action=edit&redlink=1)*), an ichthyosaur *[Ichthyosaurus crassimonus](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ichthyosaurus_crassimonus&action=edit&redlink=1)* and the only Upper Lias [pterosaur](/source/Pterosaur) known in Britain, [Parapsicephalus](/source/Parapsicephalus) being found at the site. The fossil are found in the *bifrons* zone, and although not abundant, it is very different from surrounding fossil sites.[3]
