**Bouches-du-Rhin** (French: [\[buʃ.dy.ʁɛ̃\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French); "Mouths of the [Rhine](/source/Rhine)", [Dutch](/source/Dutch_language): *Monden van de Rijn*) was a [department](/source/Departments_of_France) of the [First French Empire](/source/First_French_Empire) in the present-day [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands). It was named after the mouth of the river [Rhine](/source/Rhine). It was formed in 1810, when the [Kingdom of Holland](/source/Kingdom_of_Holland) was annexed by France. Its territory corresponded with the eastern half of the present-day Dutch province of [North Brabant](/source/North_Brabant) and a part of the province of [Gelderland](/source/Gelderland). Its capital was ['s-Hertogenbosch](/source/'s-Hertogenbosch).

The department was subdivided into the following [arrondissements](/source/Arrondissement) and [cantons](/source/Canton_(administrative_division)) (situation in 1812):[1]

Its population in 1812 was 257,580.[1]

After [Napoleon](/source/Napoleon_I_of_France) was defeated in 1814, the department became part of the [United Kingdom of the Netherlands](/source/United_Kingdom_of_the_Netherlands).
