# Botrychium boreale

***Botrychium boreale***, commonly called **northern moonwort**, is a species of [fern](/source/Fern) in the family [Ophioglossaceae](/source/Ophioglossaceae).[2][3] It has a short, single leaved [rhizome](/source/Rhizome) that stands upright.[4][5]

## Taxonomy

*Botrychium boreale* was first [described](/source/Species_description) in 1857 by [Julius Milde](/source/Carl_August_Julius_Milde), based on material from Norway.[6]
