==History==
Botlek was originally the name of a stretch of the [Nieuwe Maas](/source/Nieuwe_Maas) river, part of the [Rhine–Meuse delta](/source/Rhine%E2%80%93Meuse%E2%80%93Scheldt_delta) near the [Dutch](/source/Netherlands) cities of [Vlaardingen](/source/Vlaardingen) and [Spijkenisse](/source/Spijkenisse) in the [province](/source/Provinces_of_the_Netherlands) of [South Holland](/source/South_Holland). Specifically, it was the name of the [strait](/source/strait) that separated the island of [Rozenburg](/source/Rozenburg) from the [sand bar](/source/bar_(landform)) of Welplaat. The strait itself was merely the continuation of the [Nieuwe Maas](/source/Nieuwe_Maas), and the stretch of the river south of Rozenburg continued to be called [Nieuwe Maas](/source/Nieuwe_Maas) until the confluence with [Het Scheur](/source/Het_Scheur) formed the Brielse Maas [estuary](/source/estuary) (now the [Brielse Meer](/source/Brielse_Meer)).
