***Bothriogenys*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [anthracotheres](/source/Anthracothere) that lived in [Eastern Africa](/source/Eastern_Africa) during the [Late Eocene](/source/Priabonian) to [Early Oligocene](/source/Rupelian).[1]

## Distribution

Most fossils have been found in [Fayum](/source/Fayum), [Egypt](/source/Egypt), but one [species](/source/Species), *B. orientalis*, is known from Late Eocene deposits in [Thailand](/source/Thailand). It is believed to have originated from the Asian genus *[Anthracokeryx](/source/Anthracokeryx)*.[2] *Bothriogenys* is believed to be one of the first anthracotheriids to have entered [Africa](/source/Africa).[3]

## Description

In life, they would have resembled [hippopotamuses](/source/Hippopotamus) with small, elongated heads.

## Palaeobiology

### Growth and development

The deciduous [premolars](/source/Premolar) in the [mandible](/source/Mandible) of *B. fraasi* were retained all the way until the third mandibular [molar](/source/Molar_(tooth)) began developing in the [crypt](/source/Tooth_eruption), in contrast to the modern hippopotamus that sheds all deciduous premolars by the time its M3 develops in the crypt.[4]
