Student in San Bartolome Mayor School, in 1951, he won the [Colombian Championship](/source/Colombian_Chess_Championship) in [Bogotá](/source/Bogot%C3%A1). In 1955, he took 16th in Mar del Plata ([Borislav Ivkov](/source/Borislav_Ivkov) won). In 1957, he won in [Caracas](/source/Caracas) (zonal). In 1958, he took 20th in Portorož ([interzonal](/source/interzonal); [Mikhail Tal](/source/Mikhail_Tal) won). In 1958, he took 9th in Bogotá ([Oscar Panno](/source/Oscar_Panno) won). In 1962, he took 18th in [Havana](/source/Havana) (1st Capablanca Memorial; [Miguel Najdorf](/source/Miguel_Najdorf) won). In 1963, he took 20th in Havana (2nd Capablanca Memorial; [Viktor Korchnoi](/source/Viktor_Korchnoi) won).
