# Boris Volin

**Boris Mikhailovich Volin** (born: Josif Yefimovich Fradkin; 13 June 1886 – 15 February 1957) was a [Soviet](/source/Soviet_Union) historian, journalist and politician.

## Life

He was born to a Jewish[1] family in [Hlybokaye](/source/Hlybokaye), [Disnensky Uyezd](/source/Disnensky_Uyezd), [Vilna Governorate](/source/Vilna_Governorate) (now [Hlybokaye District](/source/Hlybokaye_District), [Vitebsk Region](/source/Vitebsk_Region), [Belarus](/source/Belarus)). Volin became a member of the [RSDLP (b)](/source/RSDLP(b)) in 1904.[2] He published *[Questions of History](/source/Voprosy_Istorii)* and campaigned against alcohol consumption. He was a member of the [Central Committee elected by the 17th Congress of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks)](/source/Central_Committee_elected_by_the_17th_Congress_of_the_All-Union_Communist_Party_(Bolsheviks)). He was head of the School Department from 13 May 1935 to 1936. Volin was director of the [Main Administration for Literary and Publishing Affairs](/source/General_Directorate_for_the_Protection_of_State_Secrets_in_the_Press) (Glavit) from July 1931 to 1935. He was awarded the [Order of the Patriotic War](/source/Order_of_the_Patriotic_War) for organising [partisan](/source/Soviet_partisans) detachments.[2] He was a researcher at the [Marx-Engels-Lenin Institute](/source/Marx-Engels-Lenin_Institute) as well as a professor at the [Moscow State University](/source/Moscow_State_University). He died in [Moscow](/source/Moscow) and was buried at the [Novodevichy Cemetery](/source/Novodevichy_Cemetery).
