'''Bopolu''' is the capital city of [Gbarpolu County](/source/Gbarpolu_County), [Liberia](/source/Liberia), and is located 100 kilometers north of [Monrovia](/source/Monrovia). As of the 2008 census, Bopolu has a population of 2908. Bopolu was once the center of the Kondo Confederation, which included the Dei, Gola, Lorma, and [Vai tribes](/source/Vai_people). The area surrounding Bopolu reached its height of prominence under King Bosan. Traders sent slaves, ivory, gold, and [camwood](/source/Baphia_nitida) were to the Vai and Dei tribes in exchange for salt, tobacco, guns, and [European cloth](/source/Early_medieval_European_dress).<ref>[http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/73757/Bopolu Britannica.com, "Bopolu"]</ref>

Cultivation of [rice](/source/rice) and [cassava](/source/cassava) is now Bopolu's main economic activity.
