'''Boot Camp''' is a [multi-boot](/source/Multi-booting) feature supported by [Apple](/source/Apple_Inc.) for their [macOS](/source/macOS) [operating system](/source/operating_system) to assist users in installing, managing, and [booting](/source/booting) into [Microsoft Windows](/source/Microsoft_Windows) on [Intel-based Macintosh](/source/Apple%E2%80%93Intel_architecture) computers. The Boot Camp Assistant utility guides users through non-destructive [disk partitioning](/source/disk_partitioning), including resizing of an existing [HFS+](/source/HFS_Plus) or [APFS](/source/Apple_File_System) partition, if necessary, of their [hard disk drive](/source/hard_disk_drive) or [solid-state drive](/source/solid-state_drive) and installation of Windows [device driver](/source/device_driver)s for the Apple hardware. Boot Camp Assistant also handles the installation of a [Windows Control Panel](/source/Control_Panel_(Windows)) applet to control the selection of the default boot operating system.

Initially an unsupported beta for [Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger](/source/Mac_OS_X_Tiger), Boot Camp was introduced with [Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard](/source/Mac_OS_X_Leopard) and has been included in subsequent versions of the operating system.<ref name="PCWorld">{{cite magazine|url=http://www.pcworld.com/article/125393/article.html|title=Users Find Flaw in Boot Camp|last=Broersma|first=Matthew|date=April 13, 2006|access-date=August 2, 2011|magazine=[PC World](/source/PC_World)|archive-date=May 3, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190503114425/https://www.pcworld.com/article/125393/article.html|url-status=live}}</ref><ref name="WSJ">{{cite news|url=http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/ptech-20060406.html|title=Boot Camp Turns Your Mac Into a Reliable Windows PC|first=Walter|last=Mossberg|newspaper=The Wall Street Journal|date=April 6, 2006|access-date=August 2, 2011|archive-date=March 6, 2007|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070306112741/http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/ptech-20060406.html|url-status=live}}</ref> Previous versions of Boot Camp supported [Windows XP](/source/Windows_XP) and [Windows Vista](/source/Windows_Vista). Boot Camp 6.0 added support for 64-bit versions of [Windows 10](/source/Windows_10). Boot Camp 6.1, available on [macOS 10.12 Sierra](/source/macOS_Sierra) and later, only accepts new installations of Windows 7 and later. This requirement was upgraded to requiring Windows 10 for [macOS 10.14 Mojave](/source/macOS_Mojave).

Boot Camp is not supported on [Apple silicon](/source/Apple_silicon) Macs,<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|last=Warren|first=Tom|date=2020-06-24|title=Apple's new ARM-based Macs won't support Windows through Boot Camp|url=https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/24/21302213/apple-silicon-mac-arm-windows-support-boot-camp|access-date=2020-06-25|website=The Verge|language=en|archive-date=February 7, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210207065245/https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/24/21302213/apple-silicon-mac-arm-windows-support-boot-camp|url-status=live}}</ref> though it is possible to run [ARM](/source/ARM_architecture_family)-based Windows 10 or Windows 11 via [virtualization](/source/Hardware_virtualization).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.parallels.com/blogs/parallels-desktop-m1/|title=Just Released: Parallels Desktop 16.5 for Mac Supports Both M1 and Intel Chips|work=Parallels Blog|date=2021-04-14|access-date=January 18, 2022|archive-date=January 20, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220120222034/https://www.parallels.com/blogs/parallels-desktop-m1/|url-status=live}}</ref>

==Overview==
=== Installation ===
Installing Windows 10 on a Mac requires an [ISO image](/source/Optical_disc_image) of Windows 10 provided by Microsoft. Boot Camp combines Windows 10 with install scripts to load hardware drivers for the targeted Mac computer.

Boot Camp supports Windows 10 on Macs dated mid-2012 or newer.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204990|title=Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp|newspaper=Apple Support|language=en-US|access-date=2016-10-29|archive-date=October 20, 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161020203258/https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204990|url-status=live}}</ref> Apple silicon is not supported due to being ARM-based; although [Windows 11](/source/Windows_11) is able to run on ARM64, Microsoft only licenses Windows releases for ARM64 to [original equipment manufacturer](/source/original_equipment_manufacturer)s, and there are no drivers for the Apple silicon [SoCs](/source/system_on_a_chip), so Windows cannot run on Apple silicon Macs natively.<ref name=":0" />

=== Start-up Disk ===
A Mac boots from the last-used start-up disk. Holding down the [option key](/source/option_key) (⌥) at startup brings up the [boot manager](/source/Bootloader) which allows users to choose in which operating system to start the device. When using a non-Apple keyboard, the [alt key](/source/alt_key) performs the same action. The boot manager can also be launched by pressing the menu button on the [Apple Remote](/source/Apple_Remote) at startup.

On older Macs, its functionality relies on [BIOS](/source/BIOS) emulation through [EFI](/source/UEFI) and a partition table information synchronization mechanism between [GPT](/source/GUID_Partition_Table) and [MBR](/source/GUID_Partition_Table) combined.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://refit.sourceforge.net/myths/|title=You need BIOS compatibility and a MBR partition table to boot Windows|publisher=rEFIt project|date=December 9, 2006|access-date=July 19, 2009|archive-date=April 21, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190421033618/http://refit.sourceforge.net/myths/|url-status=live}}</ref>

On newer Macs, Boot Camp keeps the hard disk as a GPT so that Windows is installed and booted in [UEFI](/source/UEFI) mode.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://blog.twocanoes.com/post/68982862031/efi-and-windows-on-option-boot-screen|title=EFI and Windows on Option Boot Screen|publisher=Twocanoes|date=December 4, 2013|access-date=August 23, 2015|archive-date=December 18, 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161218160210/http://blog.twocanoes.com/post/68982862031/efi-and-windows-on-option-boot-screen|url-status=live}}</ref>

===Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard===
Apple lists the following requirements for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard:<ref name="bootcampsysreq-old" />

* An Intel-based Macintosh computer with the latest [firmware](/source/firmware). Early Intel-based Mac computers require an EFI firmware update for BIOS compatibility.
* A Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard installation disc or Mac OS X Disc 1 included with Macs that have Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard preinstalled. The disc is needed for installation of Windows drivers for Mac hardware.
* 10 GB free hard disk space (16 GB is recommended for Windows 7)
* A full version of one of the following operating systems:
** Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition  with Service Pack 2 or higher (32-bit editions only)<ref>{{cite web |url=http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1888 |title=Boot Camp 2.0: Which versions of Microsoft Windows are supported? |publisher=Apple Inc. |date=June 17, 2008 |access-date=October 3, 2008 |archive-date=September 13, 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080913205344/http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1888 |url-status=live }}</ref>
** Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise or Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit editions)<ref name="bootcamp64">{{cite web |url=http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846 |title=Boot Camp: Macs that work with 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows Vista |publisher=Apple Inc. |date=December 21, 2010 |access-date=January 28, 2011 |archive-date=June 23, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110623062020/http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846 |url-status=live }}</ref>
** Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit editions)

===Supported Mac computers with Windows 8===
The earliest Macs that support Windows 8 are the mid-2011 [MacBook Air](/source/MacBook_Air), 13" mid-2011 or 15" and 17" mid-2010 [MacBook Pro](/source/MacBook_Pro), except the mid-2010 13" computers, mid-2011 [Mac Mini](/source/Mac_Mini), 21" mid-2011 or 27" mid-2010 [iMac](/source/iMac), except the 21.5" mid-2010, and early 2009 [Mac Pro](/source/Mac_Pro).<ref>{{cite web |url=http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634 |title=Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems |access-date=March 14, 2013 |date=March 14, 2013 |publisher=Apple Inc. |archive-date=March 18, 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130318012333/http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634 |url-status=live }}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5628 |title=Boot Camp: Frequently asked questions about installing Windows 8 |access-date=March 17, 2013 |date=March 14, 2013 |publisher=Apple Inc. |archive-date=March 18, 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130318012328/http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5628 |url-status=live }}</ref>

==Limitations==
* Boot Camp will only help a user partition their disk if the user has only a primary [HFS+](/source/HFS_Plus) or [APFS](/source/Apple_File_System) partition, an [EFI system partition](/source/EFI_system_partition), and a macOS Recovery partition.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204009|title=Set up a Windows partition on your Mac|access-date=August 23, 2015|archive-date=September 23, 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150923143104/https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204009|url-status=live}}</ref>
* Boot Camp does not help users install Linux. Most methods for dual booting with Linux on Mac rely on manual disk partitioning, and the use of an EFI boot manager such as [rEFInd](/source/rEFInd).<ref>{{cite web |last=Hoffman |first=Chris |date=April 21, 2014 |title=How to Install and Dual Boot Linux on a Mac |url=http://www.howtogeek.com/187410/how-to-install-and-dual-boot-linux-on-a-mac/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150820054004/http://www.howtogeek.com/187410/how-to-install-and-dual-boot-linux-on-a-mac/ |archive-date=August 20, 2015 |access-date=August 21, 2025 |website=How-To Geek |publisher=Valnet Publishing Group}}</ref>
* Macs transitioned to [Thunderbolt 3](/source/Thunderbolt_(interface)) in 2016 and Boot Camp does not support running Windows with a Thunderbolt 3-powered [External GPU](/source/Graphics_processing_unit) (eGPU) unit under macOS High Sierra, macOS Mojave or macOS Catalina.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208544#footnotes|title=Use an external graphics processor with your Mac|access-date=October 25, 2019|archive-date=July 3, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190703055606/https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208544#footnotes|url-status=live}}</ref>
