Shortly after leaving [Benny Goodman's](/source/Benny_Goodman) band and before starting his own band, James entered the studio at the suggestion of [Columbia Records](/source/Columbia_Records) producer [John Hammond](/source/John_Hammond_(producer)). James was paired with [Pete Johnson](/source/Pete_Johnson_(musician)) (on "Boo-Woo") and [Albert Ammons](/source/Albert_Ammons) (on the flip side's "[Woo-Woo](/source/Woo-Woo_(song))"), the two foremost practitioners of [boogie-woogie](/source/boogie-woogie) piano, which was enjoying a substantial revival at the time.
