'''Bonthe''' is a [coastal](/source/coastal) town located on [Sherbro Island](/source/Sherbro_Island) in [Bonthe District](/source/Bonthe_District) in the [southern Province](/source/Southern_Province%2C_Sierra_Leone) of [Sierra Leone](/source/Sierra_Leone). The town lies on the eastern shore of Sherbro Island, on the Sherbro [River](/source/River) estuary. Bonthe is about 60 miles south-west of [Bo](/source/Bo%2C_Sierra_Leone) and 187 miles south-east of [Freetown](/source/Freetown).

Bonthe is by far the smallest of Sierra Leone's six [municipalities](/source/municipalities) and is directly governed by a [city council](/source/city_council), headed by a [mayor](/source/mayor).  The municipality of Bonthe had a population of 9,535 in the 2004 census, with a current estimate of 10,206.<ref name="BonthePop2010" />

The major industry in Bonthe is [fishing](/source/fishing). The population of Bonthe is ethnically diverse, though mainly from the [Sherbro](/source/Sherbro_people), and [Mende](/source/Mende_people) ethnic groups.
