# Bonnie Wetzel

American jazz musician

**Bonnie Jean Addleman**, later **Bonnie Wetzel** (May 15, 1926, [Vancouver, Washington](/source/Vancouver%2C_Washington) - February 12, 1965) was an American [jazz](/source/Jazz) [double-bassist](/source/Double-bass).

Wetzel learned violin as a child, and was an [autodidact](/source/Autodidact) on bass. She played with [Ada Leonard](/source/Ada_Leonard) in an all-female ensemble, and soon after worked in a trio with [Marian Grange](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marian_Grange&action=edit&redlink=1). She married trumpeter [Ray Wetzel](/source/Ray_Wetzel) in 1949, and the pair worked in the [Tommy Dorsey](/source/Tommy_Dorsey) Orchestra in 1951.

She played in [Beryl Booker](/source/Beryl_Booker)'s trio with [Elaine Leighton](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Elaine_Leighton&action=edit&redlink=1) in 1953; this ensemble toured Europe in 1953–54, and recorded for [Discovery Records](/source/Discovery_Records). She also played with [Herb Ellis](/source/Herb_Ellis), [Charlie Shavers](/source/Charlie_Shavers), [Roy Eldridge](/source/Roy_Eldridge), and [Don Byas](/source/Don_Byas). Later in the 1950s she freelanced in [New York City](/source/New_York_City).

She died on February 12, 1965, at the age of 38.
