**Boknafjord** or **Boknafjorden**[1] (English: Bokna Fjord)[2][3][4] is a [fjord](/source/Fjord) located in [Rogaland](/source/Rogaland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The huge fjord lies between the cities of [Stavanger](/source/Stavanger_(city)) and [Haugesund](/source/Haugesund_(town)) and dominates the central part of the county. The main part of the fjord is shared between the municipalities of [Kvitsøy](/source/Kvits%C3%B8y_Municipality), [Stavanger](/source/Stavanger_Municipality), [Tysvær](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality), [Bokn](/source/Bokn_Municipality), and [Karmøy](/source/Karm%C3%B8y_Municipality). There are dozens of smaller fjords that branch off the main part of the fjord, reaching most municipalities in the county. At its longest, the Boknafjord reaches about 96 kilometres (60 mi) into the mainland at the innermost point of the [Hylsfjorden](/source/Hylsfjorden). Other notable branches include the [Saudafjorden](/source/Saudafjorden), [Sandsfjorden](/source/Sandsfjorden), [Vindafjorden](/source/Vindafjorden), [Hervikfjorden](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hervikfjorden&action=edit&redlink=1), [Førresfjorden](/source/F%C3%B8rresfjorden), [Erfjorden](/source/Erfjorden), [Jøsenfjorden](/source/J%C3%B8senfjorden), Årdalsfjorden, Idsefjorden, [Høgsfjorden](/source/H%C3%B8gsfjorden), [Lysefjorden](/source/Lysefjorden), and [Gandsfjorden](/source/Gandsfjorden).[5]

Map of the area

The vast fjord is quite wide, and it has many islands located within its shores, some of which are quite large. Some of the notable islands include [Vestre Bokn](/source/Vestre_Bokn), [Kvitsøy](/source/Kvits%C3%B8y_(island)), [Rennesøy](/source/Rennes%C3%B8y_(island)), [Ombo](/source/Ombo), [Finnøy](/source/Finn%C3%B8y_(island)), [Mosterøy](/source/Moster%C3%B8y_(island)), and the [Sjernarøyane](/source/Sjernar%C3%B8yane) archipelago.[5]

## Tunnel

The [Rogfast](/source/Rogfast) sub-sea [tunnel](/source/Tunnel) is a huge tunnel project that is constructing a road tunnel under the Boknafjord and the Kvitsøyfjord connecting the cities of [Stavanger](/source/Stavanger_(city)) and [Haugesund](/source/Haugesund_(town)) and ultimately becoming part of a ferry-free highway system along the western coast of Norway. It will also connect the islands of [Kvitsøy Municipality](/source/Kvits%C3%B8y_Municipality) to the mainland by road. The 24-kilometre (15 mi) long and 350-metre (1,150 ft) deep tunnel is projected to be completed in 2029. Construction began in 2018. Upon completion, it will be the longest and deepest underwater road [tunnel](/source/Tunnel) in the world.[6] The cost was expected to be [€](/source/Euro)500–600 million, but later raised to [€](/source/Euro)1,700 million.
