**Bokaro district** is one of the most industrialized zones in India. It is one of the twenty-four districts of the [Jharkhand](/source/Jharkhand) state, [India](/source/India). It was established in 1991 by carving out one subdivision consisting of two blocks from [Dhanbad district](/source/Dhanbad_district) and six blocks from [Giridih district](/source/Giridih_district). It is the part of State Capital Region(SCR).

## Economy

Bokaro is one of the most industrial district in [Jharkhand](/source/Jharkhand). It is home to the Asia's largest steel plant. It is the hub of economic activity in East India. It is home to many companies such as [SAIL](/source/Steel_Authority_of_India), [Vedanta Limited](/source/Vedanta_Limited), [Dalmia Cement Bharat Limited](/source/Dalmia_Group), [Jaypee Cement (Bokaro Jaypee Cement Limited)](/source/Jaypee_Group), [ONGC](/source/ONGC) and [Orica](/source/Orica). It has many [thermal power station](/source/Thermal_power_station) such as Chandrapura DVC Thermal Power Station, Tenughat DVC Thermal Power Station and Bokaro Thermal Power Station etc. It is also home to the first explosive factory in India which is located in [Gomia](/source/Gomia). [Sudha Dairy](/source/Sudha_Dairy) has a manufacturing unit here in [Bokaro Steel City](/source/Bokaro_Steel_City)'s Sector 12.

According to the [2011 census](/source/2011_census_of_India), Bokaro district has a [population](/source/Demographics_of_India) of 2,062,330,[3] This gives it a ranking of 222nd in India (out of a total of [640](/source/Districts_of_India)).[3] The district has a population density of 716 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,850/sq mi).[3] Its [population growth rate](/source/Family_planning_in_India) over the decade 2001–2011 was 15.99%.[3] Bokaro has a [sex ratio](/source/Sex_ratio) of 916 [females](/source/Women_in_India) for every 1000 males,[3] and a [literacy rate](/source/Literacy_in_India) of 72.01%. 47.70% of the population lives in urban areas. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes make up 14.51% and 12.40% of the population respectively.[3]
