**Body** **Void** is an American [sludge metal](/source/Sludge_metal)/[doom metal](/source/Doom_metal) band, formed in 2014 in San Francisco, California (before relocating to [Winooski, Vermont](/source/Winooski,_Vermont) in 2019). Originally known as **Devoid**, they currently consist of vocalist/guitarist Willow Ryan, drummer Eddie Holgerson, and soundscapist Janys-Iren Faughn. They have released four studio albums, including the [Prosthetic Records](/source/Prosthetic_Records) releases *Bury Me Beneath This Rotting Earth* (2021) and *Atrocity Machine* (2023), the latter of which was critically acclaimed. The band have been noted for their exceptionally heavy sound, use of [noise](/source/Noise_music) and [industrial](/source/Industrial_music) elements, and prominent queer and political themes.

## History

### Origins, *I and II*, and *Ruins* (2014–2018)

Body Void formed in 2014 in San Francisco under the name **Devoid**, with an original lineup of Willow Ryan (vocals, guitar), their[note 1] brother Parker Ryan (bass), and Eddie Holgerson (drums).[1][2][3] Prior to forming the band, the three had not played music regularly in several years.[2]

In their first two years, the band released a single, "Patriarch Scum", and a pair of [demos](/source/Demo_(music)), which they then compiled as the 2015 EP *I & II*, issued by Transylanian Tapes.[4][5] This garnered the attention of [CVLT Nation](/source/CVLT_Nation), who included them in a list of "doom bands you should hear today"[4] and praised the compilation as "completely untampered" and "an album to be revered".[5]

Ahead of their debut album *Ruins*, recorded and mixed by [Brainoil](/source/Brainoil)'s Greg Wilkinson and released June 16, 2016 via Transylvanian Tapes, the group rebranded to Body Void, after a song on their second demo, to have a more unique name.[6][2][7] *Ruins* was included on CVLT Nation's top-ten list of the year's best [sludge](/source/Sludge_metal) releases,[8] while [Kim Kelly](/source/Kim_Kelly_(journalist)), writing for [*Vice*](/source/Vice_(magazine)), praised the album as "perfectly horrible music, with an emphasis on 'perfectly.'"[6] The following March, they appeared on CVLT Nation's *Doom Nation Vol. VII* compilation album, alongside [Monarch!](/source/Monarch_(French_band)), [Graves at Sea](/source/Graves_at_Sea), and [Electric Wizard](/source/Electric_Wizard).[9] In December, [KQED](/source/KQED_Inc.)'s *The Bay Bridged* included their song "Swans" on a [mixtape](/source/Mixtape) of emerging Bay Area metal bands.[10]

### *I Live Inside a Burning House* and *You Will Know The Fear You Forced Upon Us* EP (2018–2019)

In March 2018, Body Void premiered via CVLT Nation the song "Haunted", simultaneously announcing an upcoming second album, *I Live Inside a Burning House*.[11] Another song from the album, "Given", was streamed via *[Metal Injection](/source/Metal_Injection)* the following month.[2] The band again recorded with Wilkinson, this time adding [Brad Boatright](/source/Brad_Boatright) as mastering engineer.[12] The album was released on May 11, 2018, via Seeing Red, Crown & Throne, and Dry Cough Records, and given an exclusive stream by the website *Echoes and Dust*.[13] Kelly, again writing for *Vice*, listed it among her favorite metal albums of the year.[14]

The following March, they released the two-song EP *You Will Know The Fear You Forced Upon Us*, via the same labels.[15][16] The EP again made CVLT Nation's list of the year's top sludge releases.[17] *[The Quietus](/source/The_Quietus)* also mentioned the EP in their year-end list of metal albums, calling it "excellent" and "a righteous call to arms".[18] *[Invisible Oranges](/source/Invisible_Oranges)* wrote that the band "demonstrate excellence at this brand of claustrophobic, all-encompassing noise devastation."[17]

### Move to Vermont, signing to Prosthetic, and *Bury Me Beneath This Rotting Earth* (2019–2023)

In late 2019, the band amicably split with Parker Ryan, who left to pursue other projects.[19] Concurrently, unhappy with the Bay Area metal scene, the remaining duo of Willow Ryan and Eddie Holgerson relocated to the [New England](/source/New_England) region, settling in [Winooski](/source/Winooski,_Vermont), Vermont.[20][3][21][1][22]

The band recorded a [split album](/source/Split_album) with the band Keeper, released on January 15, 2020 via Roman Nvmeral and Tridroid Records and given an exclusive stream via *Invisible Oranges*.[23] On February 5, they performed with Bismuth and [Vile Creature](/source/Vile_Creature)'s KW Campol at The Black Heart in [Camden Town](/source/Camden_Town), London.[24]

In the summer of 2020, amid the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic) and the [George Floyd protests](/source/George_Floyd_protests), the group began writing and recording a third album.[3] The album was produced by Eric Sauter, with Wilkinson moving to mixing and mastering, longtime collaborator Ibay Arifin Suradi handling the artwork, and Janys-Iren Faughn, then the band's touring bassist and a solo artist under the name Entresol, providing [noise](/source/Noise_in_music) and [electronics](/source/Electronic_musical_instrument).[25][26][27]

In February 2021, the band announced they had signed to [Prosthetic Records](/source/Prosthetic_Records) and released "Wound", the first single from their third album, titled *Bury Me Beneath This Rotting Earth*.[3][25][28] Another single, "Fawn", was premiered the following month via [*Decibel*](/source/Decibel_(magazine)).[29] In early April, they performed at a [virtual](/source/Virtual_event) edition of [Roadburn Festival](/source/Roadburn_Festival), alongside [Aaron Turner](/source/Aaron_Turner), [Nadja](/source/Nadja_(band)), [Steve Von Till](/source/Steve_Von_Till), [Dawn Ray'd](/source/Dawn_Ray'd), [Emma Ruth Rundle](/source/Emma_Ruth_Rundle), [Thou](/source/Thou_(American_band)), [Sunrot](/source/Sunrot), [Inter Arma](/source/Inter_Arma), [Kayo Dot](/source/Kayo_Dot), and [Blanck Mass](/source/Blanck_Mass).[30][31][26]

*Bury Me Beneath This Rotting Earth* was released on April 23 via Prosthetic, with a [cassette](/source/Cassette_tape) release by Tridroid Records.[25][26][3] It was included on *[Kerrang!](/source/Kerrang!)*'s list of the month's best rock and metal albums,[32] *[PopMatters](/source/PopMatters)*'s list of the month's best metal albums,[33] *Treble*'s list of the year's best metal albums,[34] and *Decibel*'s list of the best albums of the year.[35] In an August 2021 interview with *[New Noise Magazine](/source/New_Noise_Magazine)*, Nadja's [Aidan Baker](/source/Aidan_Baker) listed Body Void as a newer artist he enjoyed.[36] Later that year, they joined [Uniform](/source/Uniform_(band)) and [Portrayal of Guilt](/source/Portrayal_of_Guilt) as an opener on the former's Fall tour.[22][37][38][39][40][41]

In May 2022, Body Void performed at the 2022 [Oblivion Access Festival](/source/Oblivion_Access_Festival), alongside Thou, [16](/source/16_(band)), [Dorthia Cottrell](/source/Dorthia_Cottrell) of [Windhand](/source/Windhand), Jarhead Fertilizer, [Soul Glo](/source/Soul_Glo), and [Vile Creature](/source/Vile_Creature).[42][43] That same month, they joined [Primitive Man](/source/Primitive_Man_(band))'s 10th anniversary tour alongside Mortiferum, Jarhead Fertilizer, [Elizabeth Colour Wheel](/source/Lane_Shi_Otayonii), and [Candlemass](/source/Candlemass_(band)).[44][45][46] In August, the band independently released the EP *Burn The Homes Of Those Who Seek To Control Our Bodies*, of which *Invisible Oranges*' Ted Nubel wrote, "Their palpable anger filters into noisy, acerbic doom like a painful dose of [capsaicin](/source/Capsaicin), burning and twisting already heavy music into something legitimately tough to process."[47] Ahead of this EP, Faughn was made a full member of the band.[20][1][48]

### *Atrocity Machine* (2023–present)

April 2023 saw the band return to Roadburn Festival, this time alongside [Bell Witch](/source/Bell_Witch_(band)), [Teeth of the Sea](/source/Teeth_of_the_Sea), [Bo Ningen](/source/Bo_Ningen), [High Vis](/source/High_Vis), [OvO](/source/OvO_(band)), [Deafheaven](/source/Deafheaven), [Boy Harsher](/source/Boy_Harsher), [Cave In](/source/Cave_In), [Julie Christmas](/source/Julie_Christmas), [Wolves in the Throne Room](/source/Wolves_in_the_Throne_Room), [Giles Corey](/source/Dan_Barrett), [Chat Pile](/source/Chat_Pile), [Backxwash](/source/Backxwash), [KEN Mode](/source/KEN_Mode), [Have a Nice Life](/source/Have_a_Nice_Life), and [Mamaleek](/source/Mamaleek).[49][50] In June, they joined [Zao](/source/Zao_(American_band)) for a West Coast tour with Mouth For War and Godcollider.[51]

In August, the band announced a fourth album titled *Atrocity Machine* and released the project's first single, "Flesh Market".[52][53] [Uniform](/source/Uniform_(band))'s Ben Greenberg produced, mixed, and engineered the album,[20][54][55][56] with Boatright mastering, and [Primitive Man](/source/Primitive_Man_(band))'s Ethan Lee McCarthy created the artwork.[57][56] Later that month, *Metal Injection* included "Flesh Market" in a list of "The 15 Underground Metal Bands You Might've Missed In August 2023".[58] On September 25, they released another single, "Cop Show", with an accompanying lyric video.[59]

*Atrocity Machine* was released on October 13 via Prosthetic.[60][61][62] It appeared on month- and year-end lists of the best metal albums from *[PopMatters](/source/PopMatters)*,[63][64] *[Bandcamp Daily](/source/Bandcamp#Bandcamp_Daily)*,[65] *Treble*,[66] [CVLT Nation](/source/CVLT_Nation),[67] *[The Quietus](/source/The_Quietus)*,[68] and *[BrooklynVegan](/source/BrooklynVegan)*.[55] McCarthy, speaking to *BrooklynVegan*, named the album as one of his personal favorites of the year.[69]

In January 2024, *[Metal Hammer](/source/Metal_Hammer)* listed the band as one of "4 brilliant new metal bands you need to hear this month".[70] In April, they performed *Atrocity Machine* at their third Roadburn appearance, this time alongside [Health](/source/Health_(band)), [Clipping](/source/Clipping_(band)), [Kavus Torabi](/source/Kavus_Torabi), [Uboa](/source/Uboa), [Blood Incantation](/source/Blood_Incantation), [The Jesus and Mary Chain](/source/The_Jesus_and_Mary_Chain), [Chelsea Wolfe](/source/Chelsea_Wolfe), [Lankum](/source/Lankum), [Ragana](/source/Ragana_(band)), [Drowse](/source/Drowse), [Royal Thunder](/source/Royal_Thunder), [Khanate](/source/Khanate_(band)), [Laster](/source/Laster_(band)), [Inter Arma](/source/Inter_Arma), [Birds in Row](/source/Birds_in_Row), [White Ward](/source/White_Ward), and [Thantifaxath](/source/Thantifaxath).[71][72][73] Later in the year, they performed at Northwest Terror Fest alongside [Amenra](/source/Amenra), [Forbidden](/source/Forbidden_(band)), [Giant Squid](/source/Giant_Squid_(band)), [Immortal Bird](/source/Immortal_Bird), [Repulsion](/source/Repulsion_(band)), [Slow Crush](/source/Slow_Crush), and [Weekend Nachos](/source/Weekend_Nachos).[74][75][76] They also played the inaugural [Toronto](/source/Toronto)-based Prepare The Ground festival, alongside [40 Watt Sun](/source/40_Watt_Sun), [KEN Mode](/source/KEN_Mode), [Mares of Thrace](/source/Mares_of_Thrace_(band)), [Marissa Nadler](/source/Marissa_Nadler), [Odonis Odonis](/source/Odonis_Odonis), [Sunrot](/source/Sunrot), [Drowse](/source/Drowse), [Maggot Heart](/source/Maggot_Heart), [North of America](/source/North_of_America), [Orchid](/source/Orchid_(hardcore_punk_band)), and [Tomb Mold](/source/Tomb_Mold).[77][78][79]

In May, the band joined Vermin Womb and [Sissy Spacek](/source/Sissy_Spacek_(band)) in supporting [Liturgy](/source/Liturgy_(band)) on their *[93696](/source/93696)* North American tour.[80][81] However, on June 6, the band announced they were leaving the tour after only a week; no official reason was disclosed, and Liturgy claimed they were not informed of the decision.[82][83]

## Musical style

Body Void's music has most often been classified as [doom](/source/Doom_metal) and [sludge metal](/source/Sludge_metal), with elements of [drone metal](/source/Drone_metal), [crust punk](/source/Crust_punk), [black metal](/source/Black_metal), [death metal](/source/Death_metal), [noise](/source/Noise_music), and [industrial](/source/Industrial_music).[note 2] Their early sound as Devoid was likened to black metal-influenced acts such as [Oathbreaker](/source/Oathbreaker_(band)), [Deafheaven](/source/Deafheaven), [Wolves in the Throne Room](/source/Wolves_in_the_Throne_Room), and [Behemoth](/source/Behemoth_(band)).[5] Since then, they have been credited alongside [Sunrot](/source/Sunrot), [Thou](/source/Thou_(American_band)), [Primitive Man](/source/Primitive_Man_(band)), [Vile Creature](/source/Vile_Creature), [Dawn Ray'd](/source/Dawn_Ray'd), [Dragged into Sunlight](/source/Dragged_into_Sunlight), and others as representing a new generation of metal.[26][84] With the addition of soundscapist Janys-Iren Faughn as a member, the band began introducing noise, industrial, [ambient](/source/Ambient_music), and [power electronics](/source/Power_electronics_(music_genre)) elements to their sound, most prominently on *Atrocity Machine*.[1][7][20][52][70]

The band members have cited [Khanate](/source/Khanate_(band)) and Vile Creature as major influences,[26][22] as well as Indian, Primitive Man, [Godspeed You! Black Emperor](/source/Godspeed_You!_Black_Emperor), [Pupil Slicer](/source/Pupil_Slicer), [Dystopia](/source/Dystopia_(band)), and [Sunn O)))](/source/Sunn_O)))).[12][31][21][57] Their later industrial/noise sounds on *Atrocity Machine* were inspired by [Killing Joke](/source/Killing_Joke), [Wolf Eyes](/source/Wolf_Eyes), [Pharmakon](/source/Pharmakon_(music)), and [Controlled Bleeding](/source/Controlled_Bleeding).[53][57] They also draw influence from poetry, [hip-hop](/source/Hip_hop_music), and [punk rock](/source/Punk_rock).[56] Vocalist Willow Ryan has expressed personal appreciation for fellow heavy bands [KEN Mode](/source/KEN_Mode), [Gridlink](/source/Gridlink), [Tomb Mold](/source/Tomb_Mold), and [Sprain](/source/Sprain_(band)), as well as non-metal artists like [Victoria Monét](/source/Victoria_Mon%C3%A9t), [Julia Byrne](/source/Julie_Byrne), [Fever Ray](/source/Karin_Dreijer), [Yeule](/source/Yeule), and [Neil Young](/source/Neil_Young).[57]

Lyrically, the band's music typically features heavy, often political themes.[1][70] They self-described their 2016 album *Ruins* as exploring "death, [gender identity](/source/Gender_identity), depression, [suicide ideation](/source/Suicidal_ideation), [dreams](/source/Dream), and, of course, [space](/source/Outer_space)".[6] *I Live Inside A Burning House* (2018) saw Willow Ryan exploring more personal themes of [queerness](/source/Queer) and [mental illness](/source/Mental_disorder).[2][3] Following this early period, they began expanding to more outward-looking themes on later projects, such as [climate crisis](/source/Climate_crisis) (*Bury Me Beneath This Rotting Earth*),[3][29][1] [bodily autonomy](/source/Bodily_integrity) (*Burn The Homes Of Those Who Seek To Control Our Bodies*),[1] and on *Atrocity Machine*, [late capitalism](/source/Late_capitalism), [police brutality](/source/Police_brutality), and the [prison-industrial complex](/source/Prison%E2%80%93industrial_complex).[63][1][70] For the latter project, Ryan took inspiration from films like *[Tetsuo: The Iron Man](/source/Tetsuo:_The_Iron_Man)*, [*Akira*](/source/Akira_(1988_film)), and the work of [Paul Verhoeven](/source/Paul_Verhoeven), as well as the novels of [William Gibson](/source/William_Gibson), [Philip K. Dick](/source/Philip_K._Dick), and [Kurt Vonnegut](/source/Kurt_Vonnegut).[57][54][56]
