**Barbara** "**Bobbie**" **Chase** is an American editor and writer in the [comic book](/source/Comic_book) industry. She worked for [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics) throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1994–1995, she was one of Marvel Group's Editors-in-Chief, the highest level a female editor has ever achieved at the company. She was Vice President of Talent Development at [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics) from 2015 to 2020.

As an editor, she has helped launched the careers of such creators as [Salvador Larroca](/source/Salvador_Larroca) and [Jamal Igle](/source/Jamal_Igle), and worked closely with writer [Peter David](/source/Peter_David) on his acclaimed run on *[The Incredible Hulk](/source/The_Incredible_Hulk_(comic_book))*. She also edited significant runs on the Marvel Comics titles *[G.I. ## Biography

### Education

Chase graduated from [Mount Holyoke College](/source/Mount_Holyoke_College) with a [BA](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in English. She also studied at the [University of St. Andrews](/source/University_of_St._Andrews) in Scotland, and studied design and illustration at the [Parsons School of Design](/source/Parsons_School_of_Design) and the [New School for Social Research](/source/New_School_for_Social_Research).

### Marvel Comics

Chase began working for Marvel in 1985 when she was hired as an assistant editor of Marvel's Special Projects Department. She then went on to do work as a freelance writer and designer.

In 1986, she was promoted to Editor.[1] She had a lengthy run as editor of Marvel's line of [*G.I. Joe* comics](/source/G.I._Joe_comics), including the flagship title *[G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero](/source/G.I._Joe%3A_A_Real_American_Hero_(Marvel_Comics))*.

In 1988, she took over the editorial reins of *[The Incredible Hulk](/source/The_Incredible_Hulk_(comic_book))*, editing that title for 10 years.

In 1989, while editing [John Byrne](/source/John_Byrne_(comics))'s *[The Sensational She-Hulk](/source/The_Sensational_She-Hulk)* series, she came into conflict with the creator, and he was ultimately fired from the series.[2] In 1990, she edited the *Steeltown Rockers* [limited series](/source/Limited_series_(comics)).

During her time at Marvel, Chase was cited in the company's "[Bullpen Bulletins](/source/Bullpen_Bulletins)" news and information page as both "Battling" Bobbie Chase[3] and "Breathtaking" Bobbie Chase.[4]

Because of her tenure on Marvel's *[G.I. Joe](/source/G.I._Joe_(comics))* comics, in early 1991 Chase worked with [Hasbro](/source/Hasbro) and Impel Marketing ([Upper Deck Company](/source/Upper_Deck_Company)) on developing the first sets of [GI Joe](/source/GI_Joe) [trading cards](/source/Trading_card).

In the early 1990s, Chase had long tenures as editor of *[Ghost Rider](/source/Ghost_Rider)* and *[Doctor Strange](/source/Doctor_Strange)*. With her associate editor [Evan Skolnick](/source/Evan_Skolnick), Chase revitalized those monthly series, which were critically lauded and boasted relatively strong sales (taking into account the general sagging of the comic book market at that time).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

In late 1994, Chase was made Editor-in-Chief of the company's [Marvel Edge](/source/Marvel_Edge) imprint,[5] which published comics aimed towards older teens, including such titles as *[Daredevil](/source/Daredevil_(Marvel_Comics_series))*, *[Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme](/source/Doctor_Strange%2C_Sorcerer_Supreme)*, *[Ghost Rider](/source/Ghost_Rider)*, *[Incredible Hulk](/source/Hulk)*, and *[Punisher](/source/Punisher)*.

In 1995, Chase became Executive Editor of [Marvel Entertainment](/source/Marvel_Entertainment). During this period, Chase was the editor for a number of [*Star Trek* comic book series](/source/Star_Trek_comics), including:

In 1997, she edited the *[Heroes Return](/source/Heroes_Return)* limited series, featuring the return of [Captain America](/source/Captain_America), [Iron Man](/source/Iron_Man), [Fantastic Four](/source/Fantastic_Four), the [Avengers](/source/Avengers_(comics)), and several other superheroes.[6] Chase (along with [Peter David](/source/Peter_David) and [Adam Kubert](/source/Adam_Kubert)) was nominated for a 1998 [Harvey Award](/source/Harvey_Award) for Best Single Issue or Story for *[The Incredible Hulk](/source/The_Incredible_Hulk_(comic_book))* #-1.

She took over the editorial reins of *[Iron Man](/source/Iron_Man_(comic_book))* in 1998, staying in charge of that title until 2001. From 1999 to 2001 she was editor of *[Fantastic Four](/source/Fantastic_Four_(comic_book))*.

Chase was laid off from Marvel in 2001 when [Joe Quesada](/source/Joe_Quesada) and [Bill Jemas](/source/Bill_Jemas) took over the top posts.[7]

### Children's publishing

After leaving Marvel, Chase served as Editorial Director of the [equine](/source/Equine)-focused [book sales club](/source/Book_sales_club) PONY, a division of the Norwegian publisher [Stabenfeldt International](/source/Stabenfeldt_International).[7][8]

### DC Comics

In 2011, she joined [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics) as a senior editor on the [Batman](/source/Batman) titles, such as *[Nightwing](/source/Nightwing_(comic_book))*, *[Batgirl](/source/Batgirl_(comic_book))*, and *[Teen Titans](/source/Teen_Titans_(comic_series))*. She was hired by [Bob Harras](/source/Bob_Harras), an old colleague from Marvel.[7] In 2012 she was promoted to [DC Universe](/source/DC_Universe) Editorial Director, working on such titles as *[Red Hood and the Outlaws](/source/Red_Hood_and_the_Outlaws)* and *[The Savage Hawkman](/source/The_Savage_Hawkman)*.[9] In April 2015 Chase was named Vice President of Talent Development at DC. She was laid off from DC on August 10, 2020.[10]

## Personal life

Chase currently resides in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles). Bobbie is married to Craig Kunaschk, who at the time was [Marvel's](/source/Marvel_Comics) Manager of Business Relations and Direct Sales, and the two have a son, Chase, and a daughter, Clare.[11]
