LeRose** (/ləˈroʊz/; June 3, 1921 – August 30, 2006)[1] was an American [advertising](/source/Advertising) [artist](/source/Artist) and a [comic book](/source/Comic_book) [colorist](/source/Colorist) for [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics), who provided the color for hundreds of stories featuring [Batman](/source/Batman), [Superman](/source/Superman), and other major characters. ## Biography ### Early life and career Born in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn), [New York City](/source/New_York_City), [New York](/source/New_York_(state)),[2] but raised nearby in the [Richmond Hill](/source/Richmond_Hill,_Queens) neighborhood of [Queens](/source/Queens),[2] Bob LeRose was [drafted](/source/Military_conscription) into the [U.S. Army](/source/U.S._Army) in 1942.[2] Following his discharge three years later, he attended [Phoenix Art Institute](/source/Phoenix_Art_Institute) in New York City on the [G.I. Bill](/source/G.I._Bill).[2] He spent more than two decades as an office manager and a [watercolor](/source/Watercolor) artist for the [advertising agency](/source/Advertising_agency) [Johnstone and Cushing](/source/Johnstone_and_Cushing), which created custom comics for *[Boys' Life](/source/Boys'_Life)* magazine and other clients.[2][3] In 1962, when [art director](/source/Art_director) [Al Stenzel](/source/Al_Stenzel) took the *Boys' Life* account, without which the agency could not survive, LeRose followed Stenzel to the newly formed Stenzel Productions.[3] ### DC Comics In 1976, comic-book artist [Neal Adams](/source/Neal_Adams), who had worked with LeRose at Johnstone and Cushing, recommended him to [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics).[2] LeRose's first recorded credits include *Batman Family* #11 (June 1977), *DC Special* #28 (July 1977) and *DC Special Series* #1 (1977).[4] LeRose colored across genres, from superheroes (*[Action Comics](/source/Action_Comics),* *[Detective Comics](/source/Detective_Comics)*, *[Justice League America](/source/Justice_League_of_America)*, *[Legion of Super-Heroes](/source/Legion_of_Super-Heroes)* *[Robin](/source/Robin_(character))*, *[World's Finest Comics](/source/World's_Finest_Comics)*) to the supernatural (*[Secrets of Haunted House](/source/Secrets_of_Haunted_House)*), from [war comics](/source/War_comics) (*[G.I. Combat](/source/G.I._Combat)*) to [Westerns](/source/Western_comics) (*[Weird Western Tales](/source/Weird_Western_Tales)*). In addition, he was among the handful who handled the multi-issue *[Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe](/source/Who's_Who_in_the_DC_Universe)* in 1985, and also recolored the hardcover [Golden Age of Comic Books](/source/Golden_Age_of_Comic_Books) reprint series *Superman Archives* and *Batman: The Dark Knight Archives* in the 1990s. From 1986 to 1993, he was, variously, the cover artist or the colorist of [Mayfair Games](/source/Mayfair_Games)' "DC Heroes" line of [roleplaying games](/source/Roleplaying_games), including *An Element of Danger*, *The Green Lantern Corps Sourcebook*, *Who's Who in the DC Universe*, *Superman: The Man of Steel Sourcebook*, and *DC Heroes Role-Playing Game*, 3rd Edition.[5] ### Later life LeRose semi-retired in 1996, continuing to work at DC one day a week, initially in the office and eventually, due to [emphysema](/source/Emphysema), at home in [Elmont, New York](/source/Elmont,_New_York), on [Long Island](/source/Long_Island).[2] He died of complications from that disease.[2] He was predeceased by his first wife, Alice, with whom he had three children and who died in 1992. He remarried in 2002, to second wife Veronica, who was 61 when she survived him.[2] LeRose had three children, sons Kenny and John LeRose and daughter Roberta LeRose McIntyre.[2] ## References 1.
