For the college basketball head coach, see [Bob Chipman (basketball)](/source/Bob_Chipman_(basketball)).

**Robert Howard Chipman** (October 11, 1918 – November 8, 1973) was an American professional [baseball](/source/Baseball) player, a [left-handed](/source/Left-handed) [pitcher](/source/Pitcher) who spent all or parts of a dozen seasons in the [Major League Baseball](/source/Major_League_Baseball) from 1941 to 1952[1] for the [Brooklyn Dodgers](/source/Brooklyn_Dodgers), [Chicago Cubs](/source/Chicago_Cubs) and [Boston Braves](/source/Boston_Braves_(baseball)). The [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn,_New_York) native stood 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall and weighed 190 pounds (86 kg).

Chipman's career began in 1939 in the [minor leagues](/source/Minor_league_baseball), and after winning 14, 17 and 17 games in successive campaigns, he was recalled by the Dodgers in September 1941, appearing in one game (and winning it) with five [scoreless](/source/Shutout_(baseball)) [innings pitched](/source/Innings_pitched) in [relief](/source/Relief_pitcher) against the cellar-dwelling [Philadelphia Phillies](/source/Philadelphia_Phillies) on the last day of the [season](/source/1941_in_baseball), September 28.[2] The Dodgers had clinched the [National League](/source/National_League_(baseball)) [pennant](/source/Pennant_(sports)) three days earlier; Chipman's victory was Brooklyn's 100th of 1941. But he was not eligible to appear in the [1941 World Series](/source/1941_World_Series), and spent most of the [wartime](/source/World_War_II) 1942 and 1943 campaigns with the Dodgers' [Montreal Royals](/source/Montreal_Royals) [farm club](/source/Farm_system).

Then, after only 11 games with Brooklyn in 1944, he was swapped to the Cubs for [second baseman](/source/Second_baseman) [Eddie Stanky](/source/Eddie_Stanky) on June 6. Chipman spent the next 51⁄2 seasons in a Chicago uniform, working in 189 [games](/source/Games_pitched), 72 as a [starting pitcher](/source/Starting_pitcher). As a member of the [1945 National League champions](/source/1945_Chicago_Cubs_season), he appeared as a relief pitcher in Game 5 of the [World Series](/source/1945_World_Series) against the [Detroit Tigers](/source/Detroit_Tigers), and faced two left-handed batters: he [walked](/source/Base_on_balls) [Eddie Mayo](/source/Eddie_Mayo) and retired [Doc Cramer](/source/Doc_Cramer) on a [ground ball](/source/Ground_ball).[3]

All told, Chipman won 51 and lost 46 in 293 [games pitched](/source/Games_pitched), 87 as a starter. He notched 29 [complete games](/source/Complete_game) and seven [shutouts](/source/Shutout) and, as a reliever, 14 [saves](/source/Save_(baseball)). In 8802⁄3 innings pitched, he allowed 889 [hits](/source/Hit_(baseball)) and 386 walks, with 322 [strikeouts](/source/Strikeout).

Chipman died November 8, 1973, in [Huntington, New York](/source/Huntington,_New_York). He was inducted posthumously into the [Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame](/source/Suffolk_Sports_Hall_of_Fame) on [Long Island](/source/Long_Island) in the Baseball Category with the Class of 2006.
