**Robert S. Bateson Jr.** (born May 14, 1961) is an American former [football](/source/American_football) [linebacker](/source/Linebacker) who played for [SUNY Cortland](/source/Cortland_Red_Dragons_football), and later professionally for the [Hamilton Tiger-Cats](/source/Hamilton_Tiger-Cats) and [Seahawks Bellusco](https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackhawks_Cernusco) in [Italy](/source/Italy).

He became a [personal trainer](/source/Personal_trainer) and [strength and conditioning coach](/source/Strength_and_conditioning_coach) after retiring, and was associate head coach for [The Park School of Buffalo](/source/The_Park_School_of_Buffalo) and the [Buffalo eXtreme](/source/Buffalo_eXtreme).

## Early life

Robert S. Bateson Jr. was born on May 14, 1961 in [Chicago, Illinois](/source/Chicago%2C_Illinois), the son of Genevieve (née Kruk) and [investment manager](/source/Investment_manager) Robert S. Bateson Sr.[1][2]

His family moved to [Columbus, Ohio](/source/Columbus%2C_Ohio) in 1974, and later to [Eden, New York](/source/Eden%2C_New_York) in 1977.[3] Bateson played [linebacker](/source/Linebacker) at Eden Central High School, and was named to the [NYSPHSAA](/source/New_York_State_Public_High_School_Athletic_Association) Section VI All-Star team as a senior in 1978.[4]

## Playing career

Bateson was originally recruited to play collegiate football at [Kent State University](/source/Kent_State_Golden_Flashes_football), but couldn't afford the tuition after they only offered him a partial [scholarship](/source/Scholarship).[5]

He was a four-year starter for [SUNY Cortland](/source/Cortland_Red_Dragons_football), captaining the team in 1982 when he set the school's single-season record for [tackles](/source/Tackle_(football_move)) with 140, and the single-game record for tackles with 23.[6][7] Bateson was named to the 1982 All-[ECAC](/source/Eastern_College_Athletic_Conference) Team following his senior campaign.[8] He graduated in 1983 with a [BS](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) in [physical education](/source/Physical_education), concentrated in [sports medicine](/source/Sports_medicine).[3]

After his senior year at SUNY Cortland, he received tryouts with [United States Football League](/source/United_States_Football_League) teams including the [Chicago Blitz](/source/Chicago_Blitz), [New Jersey Generals](/source/New_Jersey_Generals) and [Pittsburgh Maulers](/source/Pittsburgh_Maulers_(1984)).[9] He played professionally for the [Hamilton Tiger-Cats](/source/Hamilton_Tiger-Cats) of the [Canadian Football League](/source/Canadian_Football_League) in 1984. Bateson was signed by the [Buffalo Bills](/source/Buffalo_Bills) of the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) as a free agent in 1985, but released due to a knee injury.[6] He finished his playing career in [Italy](/source/Italy), competing for [Seahawks Bellusco](https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackhawks_Cernusco) in the [Italian Football League](/source/Italian_Football_League) from 1986 to 1988.

## Coaching career

Bateson founded the [health club](/source/Health_club) Body Blocks Fitness in 1988, located in downtown [Buffalo](/source/Buffalo%2C_New_York).[10] He has served as [personal trainer](/source/Personal_trainer) for professional athletes including [Dave Hollins](/source/Dave_Hollins).[11][12]

He was [strength and conditioning coach](/source/Strength_and_conditioning_coach) under [Richard Jacob](/source/Richard_Jacob) for the [Buffalo Rapids](/source/Buffalo_Rapids) of the [American Basketball Association](/source/American_Basketball_Association_(2000%E2%80%93present)) from 2005 to 2006, and later for the [Buffalo Stampede](/source/Buffalo_Stampede) of the [Premier Basketball League](/source/Premier_Basketball_League) in 2008.[10][13] Bateson was hired by the [Buffalo Bills](/source/Buffalo_Bills) to run informal team workouts during the [2011 NFL lockout](/source/2011_NFL_lockout).[14] He served as strength and conditioning coach for the [Nigeria men's national basketball team](/source/Nigeria_men's_national_basketball_team) under [Alexander Nwora](/source/Alexander_Nwora) at the [2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup](/source/2019_FIBA_Basketball_World_Cup).[6]

Bateson served as associate head coach of [The Park School of Buffalo](/source/The_Park_School_of_Buffalo) under [Richard Jacob](/source/Richard_Jacob) from 2017 to 2021, where they won the 2018 [New York State Class A](/source/New_York_state_high_school_boys_basketball_championships) championship.[6]

He was associate head coach of the [Buffalo eXtreme](/source/Buffalo_eXtreme) under [Richard Jacob](/source/Richard_Jacob) from 2023 to 2025.[15]

## Personal life

Bateson and his wife Paula own and operate RPB Holdings, a [property management](/source/Property_management) company.[16]

He was inducted into the [SUNY Cortland Athletics](/source/Cortland_Red_Dragons) C-Club Hall of Fame in 2023.[17]
