The **Boas** is a river on [Southampton Island](/source/Southampton_Island) in [Nunavut](/source/Nunavut), Canada. The river rises at [64°49′58″N 084°23′34″W / 64.83278°N 84.39278°W / 64.83278; -84.39278 (Boas River (head))](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Boas_River&params=64_49_58_N_084_23_34_W_type:waterbody_region:CA-NU&title=Boas+River+%28head%29) and its mouth is located at the [Bay of Gods Mercy](/source/Bay_of_Gods_Mercy). Proceeding inland, the river becomes braided and is about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) wide.[1]

It is named after [anthropologist](/source/Anthropology) [Franz Boas](/source/Franz_Boas).[2]

## Flora

There are rich sedge meadows in the river's 2 mi (3.2 km)-wide delta area.[3]

## Fauna

[Bearded seal](/source/Bearded_seal), [bowhead whale](/source/Bowhead_whale), [harbor seal](/source/Harbor_seal), [narwhal](/source/Narwhal), [polar bear](/source/Polar_bear), [ringed seal](/source/Ringed_seal), [walrus](/source/Walrus), and [white whale](/source/Beluga_(whale)) frequent the area.[1]

Boas River and associated wetlands is a Canadian [Important Bird Area](/source/Important_Bird_Area), site #NU022 ([63°45′N 85°40′W / 63.75°N 85.66°W / 63.75; -85.66 (Bird Area #NU022 (Boas River))](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Boas_River&params=63.75_N_85.66_W_region:CA-NU_type:landmark_scale:100000&title=Bird+Area+%23NU022+%28Boas+River%29)). The elevation varies from 0 m (0 ft) to 60 m (200 ft) [above sea level](/source/Above_mean_sea_level). The IBA is 5,402 km2 (2,086 sq mi) in size. The [Ikkattuaq Migratory Bird Sanctuary](/source/Ikkattuaq_Migratory_Bird_Sanctuary) encompasses one third of the IBA's western portion.[1]

This is a notable breeding area for the [lesser snow goose](/source/Snow_goose). Other bird species include: [American golden plover](/source/American_golden_plover), [Arctic loon](/source/Black-throated_diver), Atlantic brant, [Canada goose](/source/Canada_goose), [herring gull](/source/American_herring_gull), jaegers, [king eider](/source/King_eider), [Lapland longspur](/source/Lapland_bunting), [oldsquaw](/source/Oldsquaw), [red phalarope](/source/Red_phalarope), [red-throated loon](/source/Red-throated_diver), [Ross's goose](/source/Ross's_goose), [tundra swan](/source/Bewick's_swan), [sandhill crane](/source/Sandhill_crane), [semipalmated plover](/source/Semipalmated_plover), [semipalmated sandpiper](/source/Semipalmated_sandpiper), and [white-rumped sandpiper](/source/White-rumped_sandpiper).[1]

## History

The area was populated by [Sadlermiut](/source/Sadlermiut) until the early 20th century when they were wiped out by an epidemic.[2]
