On 1 January 2014, the municipality was dissolved and its territory was split between four other municipalities: [De Friese Meren](/source/De_Friese_Meren), which was established that day, [Leeuwarden](/source/Leeuwarden), [Heerenveen](/source/Heerenveen) and [Súdwest-Fryslân](/source/S%C3%BAdwest-Frysl%C3%A2n).
