The surnames Blonsky, [Oblonsky](/source/Oblonsky), [Obolonsky](/source/Obolonsky) may be derived from various placenames Блонь , Облонь , Оболонь.[1] According to [Vladimir Dal](/source/Vladimir_Dal)'s *[Explanatory Dictionary](/source/Explanatory_Dictionary_of_the_Living_Great_Russian_Language)*, the terms блонье, oболонье, among other meanings, referred to a kind of wet [meadow](/source/Meadow) by river (in Western parts of the [Russian Empire](/source/Russian_Empire)), as well as the surrounds of a town, a [suburb](/source/Suburb); - all originating from the generic meaning of "surrounding".,[2] and it is suggested that the term gave rise to placenames.[1] "Blonsky" may also be the Russified form of the Polish surname [Błoński](/source/B%C5%82o%C5%84ski) of similar origin.
