The species was first described as ''Thlaspi luteum'' by [Antonino de Bivona-Bernardi](/source/Antonino_de_Bivona-Bernardi) in 1806. In 1821 [Augustin Pyramus de Candolle](/source/Augustin_Pyramus_de_Candolle) placed in the new [monotypic genus](/source/monotypic_genus) ''Bivonaea'' as ''Bivonaea lutea''.<ref name = powo/>
