# Bisma Asif

**Bisma Asif** is an [Australian](/source/Australians) politician. She represents [Sandgate](/source/Electoral_district_of_Sandgate) in the [Legislative Assembly of Queensland](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Queensland). Asif is the first Muslim to be elected to the [Parliament of Queensland](/source/Parliament_of_Queensland).[1]

## Early life

Bisma Asif was born in [Lahore](/source/Lahore), [Punjab](/source/Punjab,_Pakistan), Pakistan and moved to [Sydney](/source/Sydney) with her family in 2004.[1][2]

She received a Bachelor of Economics from the [University of Queensland](/source/University_of_Queensland).[3] Asif has said that she became interested in politics and involved in the Labor Party at university, and worked on a campaign for former MP [Wayne Swan](/source/Wayne_Swan).[4]

## Political career

Prior to seeking elected office, Asif served as the president of [Young Labor](/source/Australian_Young_Labor) and as an advisor to [Anika Wells](/source/Anika_Wells).[4][5]

Asif was preselected by the [Queensland Labor Party](/source/Queensland_Labor_Party) as its candidate for [Sandgate](/source/Electoral_district_of_Sandgate) at the [2024 Queensland state election](/source/2024_Queensland_state_election) to succeed the retiring incumbent [Stirling Hinchliffe](/source/Stirling_Hinchliffe).[6]

Asif is married and lives in Sandgate. She speaks [Punjabi](/source/Punjabi_language), [English](/source/English_language), [Hindi](/source/Hindi_language) and [Urdu](/source/Urdu).[1]
