# Birecik Bridge

The **Birecik Bridge** is a 695 m (2,280 ft) long [deck arch bridge](/source/Deck_arch_bridge) carrying the [D.400](/source/State_road_D.400_(Turkey)) across the [Euphrates](/source/Euphrates) in [Birecik](/source/Birecik), [Turkey](/source/Turkey).

## Geography

The bridge is on the state highway , which runs from southwest to southeast Turkey. It spans over [Fırat River](/source/Euphrates) (Euphrates) at about [37°02′N 37°58′E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=37_02_N_37_58_E). The river marks the boundary between [Nizip](/source/Nizip) district of [Gaziantep Province](/source/Gaziantep_Province) and [Birecik](/source/Birecik) district of [Şanlıurfa Province](/source/%C5%9Eanl%C4%B1urfa_Province). Birecik is just at the east of the bridge and Nizip is 16 km (9.9 mi) to the west.

## Project and construction

Up to 1956, travel between Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa was difficult, for all vehicles had to transfer to primitive ferries over the Fırat River. The bridge project was one of the major projects of Turkey in the 1950s. The awarded company was Amaç Ticaret Türk AŞ. The governmental inspection was carried out by the [General Directorate of Highways](/source/General_Directorate_of_Highways_(Turkey)).[1] The construction began in August 1951 and the bridge was completed in March 1956.

## Details

The length of the bridge is 695 m (2,280 ft) and it is 11 m (36 ft) wide with1 m (3.3 ft) on each side reserved for pedestrians. There are five arches over the river [2] and fourteen sections over the land.[3] At the time of its completion, it was the third longest bridge in Turkey, after the [Karkamış Bridge](/source/Karkam%C4%B1%C5%9F_Bridge) and [Uzunköprü Bridge](/source/Uzunk%C3%B6pr%C3%BC_Bridge).[4]
