# BirdTrack

**BirdTrack** is an online [citizen science](/source/Citizen_science) website, operated by the [British Trust for Ornithology](/source/British_Trust_for_Ornithology) (BTO) on behalf of a partnership of the BTO, the [RSPB](/source/RSPB), [BirdWatch Ireland](/source/BirdWatch_Ireland), the [Scottish Ornithologists' Club](/source/Scottish_Ornithologists'_Club) and the [Welsh Ornithological Society](/source/Welsh_Ornithological_Society) (Welsh: *Cymdeithas Adaryddol Cymru*).[1][2][3] It is also available though [mobile apps](/source/Mobile_app).[4]

BirdTrack allows birdwatchers to record the names and numbers of birds seen in a specified location anywhere in the world.[5] It acts as a log for those wishing to maintain lists of their own sightings,[3][2] but also feeds data into various scientific surveys,[2] is used for research and conservation purposes,[3] and generates maps for public consumption. The maps are rendered using [OpenStreetMap](/source/OpenStreetMap) data.[6]

BirdTrack is part of [WorldBirds](/source/WorldBirds), a global initiative to record bird sightings.[3]

In October 2014, data from BirdTrack was used as evidence in the conviction of a gamekeeper for illegally killing ten [Common Buzzards](/source/Common_Buzzard) and an [Eurasian Sparrowhawk](/source/Eurasian_Sparrowhawk).[7]
