# Biofunctionalisation

In the field of [bioengineering](/source/Bioengineering), **biofunctionalisation** (or biofunctionalization) is the modification of a material to have [biological function](/source/Function_(biology)) and/or [stimulus](/source/Biological_target), whether permanent or temporary, while at the same time being [biologically compatible](/source/Biocompatible_material).[1][2][3]

Various types of [medical implants](/source/Implant_(medicine)) are designed to biofunctionalize so that they are accepted by the host organism[4][5] to replace or repair a defective biological function.[6]
