'''Binsoe''' is a hamlet in the civil parish of [West Tanfield](/source/West_Tanfield), [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire), England. The hamlet is just to the north of the [A6108 road](/source/A6108_road), being {{convert|1.25|mi|0}} north west of West Tanfield, and {{convert|2|mi}} south east of [Masham](/source/Masham).<ref name="GEN">{{cite web |title=Genuki: West Tanfield, Yorkshire (North Riding) |url=https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/WestTanfield |website=www.genuki.org.uk |accessdate=27 August 2020}}</ref> During the [First World War](/source/First_World_War), a field to the east of the hamlet was used as a landing ground for the [Royal Flying Corps](/source/Royal_Flying_Corps) (later, the [Royal Air Force](/source/Royal_Air_Force)).

==History==
Binsoe was not recorded in the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book), but was listed as ''Binzhou'' in 1190. The name is believed to have derived from a personal name such as ''Binteshou''. In the Victoria County History book on the North Riding from 1914, a description is made about the road that runs through the hamlet; "where the lane makes a loop round a curious tree-covered mound".<ref>{{cite web |title=Parishes: West Tanfield {{!}} British History Online |url=https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/yorks/north/vol1/pp384-389 |website=www.british-history.ac.uk |accessdate=27 August 2020}}</ref> This is a round barrow dated from the [Late Neolithic period](/source/Neolithic_period) to the [Late Bronze Age](/source/Late_Bronze_Age), and is now a scheduled monument.<ref>{{NHLE|desc=Round barrow known as Binsoe Hill, south of Binsoe Hill Farm|num=1016425|grade=<!--Not applicable to this entry-->|accessdate=27 August 2020}}</ref>

Between December 1916 and June 1919, a field to the east of Binsoe was used by [No. 76 Squadron](/source/No._76_Squadron_RAF) in the Home Defence role. Binsoe hamlet is just north of the A6108 road that connects [Ripon](/source/Ripon) with [Leyburn](/source/Leyburn) and [Richmond](/source/Richmond%2C_North_Yorkshire).
