The ancient district of Bindalen belonged to [Namdalen](/source/Namdalen). However, in 1658, when the county (''län'') of [Trondheim](/source/Tr%C3%B8ndelag) was ceded to [Sweden](/source/Sweden) in the [Treaty of Roskilde](/source/Treaty_of_Roskilde), the status of the border district was ambiguous, with residents paying some taxes to [Helgeland](/source/Helgeland), in [Nordland](/source/Nordland), and some to Namdalen. The 1838 [formannskapsdistrikt](/source/formannskapsdistrikt) law divided the country into civil municipalities which were supposed to correspond to the parishes of the [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway). The parish of Bindalen (which straddled the county border) was created as Bindal Municipality, but the southern part was part of [Nordre Trondheim](/source/Nord-Tr%C3%B8ndelag) county and the northern part of the municipality belonged to [Nordland](/source/Nordland) county, making for an unusual situation. The municipality (originally the [parish](/source/prestegjeld)) is named after the Bindalen valley ({{langx|non|Birnudalr}}). The first element is the [genitive case](/source/genitive_case) of the river name {{lang|non|Birna}} (now called the river [Åbjøra](/source/%C3%85bj%C3%B8ra)). The river name is derived from the word {{wikt-lang|non|birna}} which means "(female) [bear](/source/bear)". ===Coat of arms===
The [coat of arms](/source/coat_of_arms) was granted on 9 February 1990. The official [blazon](/source/blazon) is ''"[Azure](/source/Azure_(heraldry)), six nails [Or](/source/Or_(heraldry)) in annulo"'' ({{langx|no|I blått seks gull nagler i rosett}}). This means the arms have a blue [field](/source/field_(heraldry)) (background) and the [charge](/source/charge_(heraldry)) is a circular arrangement of six [nails](/source/Nail_(fastener)) or [rivet](/source/rivet)s. The charge has a [tincture](/source/tincture_(heraldry)) of [Or](/source/Or_(heraldry)) which means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. The blue color in the field symbolizes the importance of the sea and boating and the circular arrangement of rivets was chosen to symbolize the importance of the [boat building](/source/boat_building) industry in Bindal. There are six rivets to represent 6 school districts, 6 originally inhabited islands, and 6 fjords areas in the municipality. Bindal Municipality borders four municipalities in [Trøndelag](/source/Tr%C3%B8ndelag) county: [Høylandet Municipality](/source/H%C3%B8ylandet_Municipality) and [Nærøysund Municipality](/source/N%C3%A6r%C3%B8ysund_Municipality) in the south, [Namsskogan Municipality](/source/Namsskogan_Municipality) in the southeast, and [Leka Municipality](/source/Leka_Municipality) in the west. Bindal also has borders [Sømna Municipality](/source/S%C3%B8mna_Municipality), [Brønnøy Municipality](/source/Br%C3%B8nn%C3%B8y_Municipality), and [Grane Municipality](/source/Grane_Municipality) in [Nordland](/source/Nordland) county. The [Bindalsfjorden](/source/Bindalsfjorden) runs through the central part of the municipality.
From the coast, the municipality reaches into the mountains towards the lake [Majavatnet](/source/Majavatnet) in Grane.
