# Billy McCann

**William Thomas McCann Sr.** (September 23, 1919 – July 27, 2002) was an American [college basketball](/source/College_basketball) coach. He served as head basketball coach at [Hampden–Sydney College](/source/Hampden%E2%80%93Sydney_College), [Washington and Lee University](/source/Washington_and_Lee_University) and the [University of Virginia](/source/University_of_Virginia).

McCann played basketball and baseball at [Virginia](/source/Virginia_Cavaliers). Following his college playing career, he became a high school coach and worked his way up to head coaching positions at [Hampden–Sydney](/source/Hampden%E2%80%93Sydney_Tigers_basketball) and [Washington and Lee](/source/Washington_and_Lee_Generals_men's_basketball). He then was named head coach at [Virginia](/source/Virginia_Cavaliers_men's_basketball) in the [Atlantic Coast Conference](/source/Atlantic_Coast_Conference) (ACC) in 1957.[1] McCann resigned after the 1962–63 season.[2] His record at Virginia was 40–106.

McCann died on July 27, 2002, at age 82.[1]
