He was known for his comic [sneeze](/source/Sneeze) routines. He appeared in over 200 feature films, short subjects and television shows beginning in 1929.

## Career

### Early life and vaudeville career

The child of singers with the [Metropolitan Opera](/source/Metropolitan_Opera), he was born on September 12, 1894,[1] in a dressing room at the Hopkins Opera House in [Louisville, Kentucky](/source/Louisville%2C_Kentucky).[2] As a child, he lived in San Francisco, and left school to join a troupe of singing children. His early work included a female-impersonation act and professional boxing.[3] Gilbert began working in [vaudeville](/source/Vaudeville) at age 12, and performed burlesque on the [Columbia](/source/Columbia_Amusement_Company) and [Mutual](/source/Mutual_Burlesque_Association) circuits.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

### Big break in films

Gilbert was spotted by actor-comedian [Stan Laurel](/source/Stan_Laurel), who was in the audience at Gilbert's show *Sensations of 1929*. Laurel went backstage to meet Gilbert and was so impressed by him he introduced him to comedy producer [Hal Roach](/source/Hal_Roach). Gilbert worked as a gag writer, actor and director, and in 1929 at age 35 he appeared in his first film for the [Fox Film Corporation](/source/Fox_Film_Corporation).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Gilbert broke into comedy short subjects with the [Vitaphone](/source/Vitaphone) studio in 1930 – he appears without billing in the [Joe Frisco](/source/Joe_Frisco) comedy *The Happy Hottentots* (restored and released on DVD). Gilbert's burly frame and gruff voice made him a good comic villain, and within the year he was working consistently for Roach. He appeared in support of Roach's comedy stars [Laurel and Hardy](/source/Laurel_and_Hardy), [Charley Chase](/source/Charley_Chase), [Thelma Todd](/source/Thelma_Todd), and *[Our Gang](/source/Our_Gang)*. One of his Laurel and Hardy appearances was the [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Awards)-winning featurette *[The Music Box](/source/The_Music_Box)* (1932). Gilbert generally played blustery tough guys in the Roach comedies, but could play other comic characters, from fey [couturiers](/source/Haute_couture) to pompous radio announcers to roaring drunks. Gilbert's skill at [dialects](/source/Dialect) prompted Roach to give him his own series:[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] big Billy Gilbert teamed with little [Billy Bletcher](/source/Billy_Bletcher) as the Dutch-comic "Schmaltz Brothers." in offbeat musical shorts like "Rhapsody in Brew" (which Gilbert also directed). Gilbert regularly starred in Roach's short-comedy series *The Taxi Boys*, opposite comedians [Clyde Cook](/source/Clyde_Cook_(actor)), [Billy Bevan](/source/Billy_Bevan), [Franklin Pangborn](/source/Franklin_Pangborn), and [Ben Blue](/source/Ben_Blue).

Like many other Roach contractees, Gilbert found similar work at other studios. He appears in the early comedies of the [Three Stooges](/source/Three_Stooges) at [Columbia Pictures](/source/Columbia_Pictures), as well as in [RKO](/source/RKO) short subjects. These led to featured roles in full-length films, and from 1934 Gilbert became one of the screen's most familiar faces. In 1944, Billy signed with the prestigious [William Morris Agency](/source/William_Morris_Agency), which led to starring roles and prominent supporting roles in numerous films.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

### Feature films

One of his standard routines had Gilbert progressively getting excited or nervous about something, and his speech would break down into facial spasms, culminating in a big, loud sneeze. He used this bit so frequently that [Walt Disney](/source/Walt_Disney) thought of him immediately when casting the voice of [Sneezy](/source/Sneezy) in *[Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs](/source/Snow_White_and_the_Seven_Dwarfs_(1937_film))* (1937). Gilbert and Disney would later work together again in the "Mickey and the Beanstalk" sequence in *[Fun and Fancy Free](/source/Fun_and_Fancy_Free)* (1947),[2] with Gilbert voicing [Willie the Giant](/source/Willie_the_Giant) in a similar way to Sneezy. Gilbert did the sneeze routine in a memorable cameo in the Paramount comedy *[Million Dollar Legs](/source/Million_Dollar_Legs_(1932_film))* (1932) starring [W. C. Fields](/source/W._C._Fields), [Jack Oakie](/source/Jack_Oakie), Susan Fleming, and [Ben Turpin](/source/Ben_Turpin).

Gilbert as [Friar Tuck](/source/Friar_Tuck) and Red Skelton as Robin Hood on the *Red Skelton Show* 1956 sketch.

Gilbert is prominent in most of the movies he appeared in, and he often used dialects. He appeared as "Herring" – a parody of [Nazi](/source/Nazi) official [Hermann Göring](/source/Hermann_G%C3%B6ring) – the minister of war in [Charlie Chaplin](/source/Charlie_Chaplin)'s *[The Great Dictator](/source/The_Great_Dictator)*.[2] He danced with [Alice Faye](/source/Alice_Faye) and [Betty Grable](/source/Betty_Grable) in *[Tin Pan Alley](/source/Tin_Pan_Alley_(film))*; he stole scenes as a dim-witted [process server](/source/Service_of_process) in the fast-paced comedy *[His Girl Friday](/source/His_Girl_Friday)*; playing an Italian character, he played opposite singer [Gloria Jean](/source/Gloria_Jean) in *[The Under-Pup](/source/The_Under-Pup)* and *[A Little Bit of Heaven](/source/A_Little_Bit_of_Heaven_(1940_film))*. He was the soda server to [Freddie Bartholomew](/source/Freddie_Bartholomew) in *[Captains Courageous](/source/Captains_Courageous_(1937_film))*. He was featured in the [John Wayne](/source/John_Wayne) and [Marlene Dietrich](/source/Marlene_Dietrich) film *[Seven Sinners](/source/Seven_Sinners_(1940_film))*. All of these were choice Gilbert roles, and all filmed within a single year, demonstrating how prolific and talented he was.

Gilbert seldom starred in movies but did have occasional opportunities to play leads. In 1943, he headlined a brief series of two-reel comedies for [Columbia Pictures](/source/Columbia_Pictures). That same year, [Monogram Pictures](/source/Monogram_Pictures) teamed him with the urbane stage comedian [Frank Fay](/source/Frank_Fay_(American_actor)) for a comedy series; Fay left the series after the first entry. Gilbert asked his closest friend, vaudeville veteran [Shemp Howard](/source/Shemp_Howard), to replace him. Howard had been the original third member of the [Three Stooges](/source/Three_Stooges) before leaving to pursue a solo career.

### Later years

During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Gilbert worked on Broadway in several productions as an actor, writer and director. These include acting roles in *[Fanny](/source/Fanny_(play))*, *[The Chocolate Soldier](/source/The_Chocolate_Soldier)*, and *Gypsy Lady*, and directing roles in *[The Red Mill](/source/The_Red_Mill)* and other plays.[4] In the 1950s, Billy Gilbert worked frequently in television, including a memorable pantomime sketch with [Buster Keaton](/source/Buster_Keaton) on *[You Asked for It](/source/You_Asked_for_It)*. He appeared regularly on the children's program *[Andy's Gang](/source/Andy's_Gang)* with [Andy Devine](/source/Andy_Devine), and starred as the giant in the *[Producers' Showcase](/source/Producers'_Showcase)* TV episode of *Jack and the Beanstalk* (1956), along with [Celeste Holm](/source/Celeste_Holm) and [Joel Grey](/source/Joel_Grey) as Jack. He retired from the screen following his appearance in the feature *[Five Weeks in a Balloon](/source/Five_Weeks_in_a_Balloon_(film))* (1962).

## Personal life

Gilbert married actress Ella McKenzie.[3] She had appeared as an [ingenue](/source/Ingenue_(stock_character)) in short-subject comedies. Fellow film comedian [Charley Chase](/source/Charley_Chase) was the [best man](/source/Groomsman). In 1941, Billy and Ella adopted an 11-year-old son, Barry, who died in a 1943 shooting accident.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Ella Baxter McKenzie was an Ulster-Scot whose grandfather John McKenzie was a prominent member of the Orange Order in Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Her father was [Robert Baxter McKenzie](/source/Bob_McKenzie_(actor)), who always wore an orange flower on the Twelfth of July, Orangeman's Day in Northern Ireland, in remembrance of the family background and cultural heritage. Ella's sister was film actress [Fay McKenzie](/source/Fay_McKenzie). The family moved to America and settled in Oregon when he was nine years old. In late 1943, Gilbert appeared with Ella in a [USO](/source/USO) show, entertaining the [US Marines](/source/US_Marines) stationed in [Derry](/source/Derry), [Northern Ireland](/source/Northern_Ireland). Ella and Billy visited Ballymena in 1943; an account of their visit is reported in the *Larne Times* of December 9, 1943.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Death

Gilbert died on September 23, 1971, in [North Hollywood](/source/North_Hollywood%2C_Los_Angeles) at the age of 77, after suffering a [stroke](/source/Stroke).[2] He is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.[1]

## Legacy

For his contributions to the motion picture industry, Gilbert has a star on the [Hollywood Walk of Fame](/source/Hollywood_Walk_of_Fame) at 6263 [Hollywood Boulevard](/source/Hollywood_Boulevard).[5] [Leonard Maltin](/source/Leonard_Maltin) lauded him in his Movie Encyclopedia, "One of the screen's most beloved character actors, Billy Gilbert is remembered for two particular talents: his skill as a dialectician and his ability to stretch a simple sneeze into a hilarious routine."[6]
