# Billy Gerrish

**William Webber Walter Gerrish** (28 December 1884 – 8 August 1916), sometimes known as **Willie Gerrish**, was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as an [inside forward](/source/Inside_forward) in the [Football League](/source/The_Football_League) for [Aston Villa](/source/Aston_Villa_F.C.) and [Preston North End](/source/Preston_North_End_F.C.).[1][5]

## Personal life

Gerrish's brother Howard was also a footballer.[4] In February 1915, six months into the [First World War](/source/First_World_War), Gerrish enlisted in the [Football Battalion](/source/Football_Battalion) of the [Middlesex Regiment](/source/Middlesex_Regiment).[6] He was severely [wounded](/source/Wounded_in_action) in both legs by a [shell blast](/source/Artillery_shell) at [Delville Wood](/source/Delville_Wood) on 8 August 1916 and died later that day.[6] Gerrish has no known grave and is commemorated on the [Thiepval Memorial](/source/Thiepval_Memorial).[3]
