# Billy Clayson

**William James Clayson** (12 July 1897 – 1973) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as an [inside right](/source/Inside_right) in the [Football League](/source/English_Football_League) for [Brentford](/source/Brentford_F.C.), [Crewe Alexandra](/source/Crewe_Alexandra_F.C.), [Barnsley](/source/Barnsley_F.C.), [Chesterfield](/source/Chesterfield_F.C.), [Torquay United](/source/Torquay_United_F.C.) and [York City](/source/York_City_F.C.).[1][3] He was a prolific goalscorer for [Scarborough](/source/Scarborough_F.C.) across three spells with the club in the [Midland League](/source/Midland_Football_League_(1889)).[4][5]

## Personal life

Prior to becoming a professional footballer, Clayson served in the [British Army](/source/British_Army) and later became a publican in [Scarborough](/source/Scarborough,_North_Yorkshire).[6]
