Frustrated at being ignored by rugby union selectors, he joined the rebel [New South Wales rugby league team](/source/New_South_Wales_rugby_league_team) which played the [New Zealand All Golds](/source/New_Zealand_national_rugby_league_team) in 1907. Cann joined [South Sydney Rabbitohs](/source/South_Sydney_Rabbitohs) in 1908.
