Vinton was the star pitcher and captain of the [Andover](/source/Phillips_Academy) baseball team in the early 1880s. In 1884, Vinton joined the [National League](/source/National_League_(baseball))'s [Philadelphia Quakers](/source/Philadelphia_Quakers_(NL)). He was the team's best pitcher, posting a 10-10 record with a 2.23 [earned run average](/source/earned_run_average).<ref>Shiffert, John. ''Base ball in Philadelphia: a history of the early game, 1831–1900'' (2006), p. 120.</ref> Vinton started off slow in 1885 and finished off that season with the [Philadelphia Athletics](/source/Philadelphia_Athletics_(American_Association)). His career major league record was 17-19.

Vinton returned to Yale and graduated in 1888. He then pitched for the [New England League](/source/New_England_League)'s [Lowell Chippies](/source/Lowell_Chippies) and went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA.
