# Bill Line

**Bill Line** (born August 11, 1948) is an American former professional [football](/source/American_football) player who was a [defensive tackle](/source/Defensive_tackle) in the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL) for the [Chicago Bears](/source/Chicago_Bears). He also was a member of [The Hawaiians](/source/The_Hawaiians_(WFL)), [Southern California Sun](/source/Southern_California_Sun) and [Chicago Winds](/source/Chicago_Winds) in the [World Football League](/source/World_Football_League) (WFL). He played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [SMU Mustangs](/source/SMU_Mustangs_football).[1]

## Early years

Line attended [L.D. Bell High School](/source/L.D._Bell_High_School). He accepted a football scholarship from the [United States Air Force Academy](/source/United_States_Air_Force_Academy). He transferred to [Southern Methodist University](/source/Southern_Methodist_University) after his freshman season. As a sophomore, he suffered a knee injury and was lost for most of the season.[2]

## Professional career

Line was signed as an [undrafted free agent](/source/Undrafted_free_agent) by the [New Orleans Saints](/source/New_Orleans_Saints) after the [1971 NFL draft](/source/1971_NFL_draft). He was tried at [defensive tackle](/source/Defensive_tackle) and [defensive end](/source/Defensive_end) during training camp. He was released on September 14.[3]

After his release, he signed with the Roanoke Buckskins of the [Atlantic Coast Football League](/source/Atlantic_Coast_Football_League), where he played at [defensive tackle](/source/Defensive_tackle) in 13 games.[4]

In [1972](/source/1972_NFL_season), he signed as a [free agent](/source/Free_agent) with the [Dallas Cowboys](/source/Dallas_Cowboys). On August 17, he was traded to the [Chicago Bears](/source/Chicago_Bears) along with [offensive tackle](/source/Offensive_tackle) [Bob Asher](/source/Bob_Asher_(American_football)) and a 1973 second round draft choice (#48-[Gary Hrivnak](/source/Gary_Hrivnak)) in exchange for [quarterback](/source/Quarterback) [Jack Concannon](/source/Jack_Concannon).[5]

In [1972](/source/1972_NFL_season), he appeared in 13 games with 8 starts at [right defensive tackle](/source/Defensive_tackle). On August 22, [1973](/source/1973_NFL_season), he was released.[6]

In September [1974](/source/1974_WFL_season), he signed with [The Hawaiians](/source/The_Hawaiians_(WFL)) of the [World Football League](/source/World_Football_League). He was released on September 23.[7] In [1974](/source/1974_WFL_season), he signed with the [Southern California Sun](/source/Southern_California_Sun) of the [World Football League](/source/World_Football_League).

In [1975](/source/1975_CFL_season), he signed with the [BC Lions](/source/BC_Lions) of the [Canadian Football League](/source/Canadian_Football_League), where he was tried at [offensive tackle](/source/Offensive_tackle). He was cut on July 20.[8]

In [1975](/source/1975_WFL_season), he signed with the [Chicago Winds](/source/Chicago_Winds) of the [World Football League](/source/World_Football_League). In [1975](/source/1975_WFL_season), he was acquired by the [Southern California Sun](/source/Southern_California_Sun) after the Winds team folded.

On July 14, [1976](/source/1976_NFL_season), he was signed as a [free agent](/source/Free_agent) by the [Los Angeles Rams](/source/Los_Angeles_Rams).[9] He was released on August 3.[10]
