# Bill Grieve

**William Thomas Turner Grieve** (April 25, 1900 – August 15, 1979) was an American professional [baseball](/source/Baseball) [umpire](/source/Umpire_(baseball)) who worked in the [American League](/source/American_League) from 1938 to 1955. Grieve umpired 2,783 [major league](/source/Major_League_Baseball) games in his 18-year career. He umpired in three [World Series](/source/World_Series) ([1941](/source/1941_World_Series), [1948](/source/1948_World_Series) and [1953](/source/1953_World_Series) and two [All-Star Games](/source/Major_League_Baseball_All-Star_Game) ([1941](/source/1941_Major_League_Baseball_All-Star_Game) and [1949](/source/1949_Major_League_Baseball_All-Star_Game)).[1]

## Career

Grieve was promoted from the American Association to the American League in 1938.[2]
