**William Hunt Block** (born April 2, 1954) is an American film producer who was CEO of [Miramax](/source/Miramax) from April 2017 to October 2023. His producing credits include *[W.](/source/W._(film))* (2008), *[District 9](/source/District_9)* (2009), *[Fury](/source/Fury_(2014_film))* (2014), *[Bad Moms](/source/Bad_Moms)* (2016), *[Dirty Grandpa](/source/Dirty_Grandpa)* (2016), *[Halloween](/source/Halloween_(2018_film))* (2018), and *[Halloween Kills](/source/Halloween_Kills)* (2021).

## Early life

Block was born in [New York City](/source/New_York_City) and is the son of Huntington T. Block, an insurance underwriter,[1] and the brother of the actor [Hunt Block](/source/Hunt_Block).[2] He attended [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University) and later became a supporter of the school's [film studies](/source/Film_studies) program.[3]

## Career

Block began his career as a literary agent before founding the Intertalent Agency in 1988, where he represented artists such as [Kim Basinger](/source/Kim_Basinger), [Samuel L. Jackson](/source/Samuel_L._Jackson), [Steven Seagal](/source/Steven_Seagal), [Charlie Sheen](/source/Charlie_Sheen), [John Travolta](/source/John_Travolta), [Forest Whitaker](/source/Forest_Whitaker), [Sam Raimi](/source/Sam_Raimi), [Roland Emmerich](/source/Roland_Emmerich) and [William Friedkin](/source/William_Friedkin). In 1992, he joined [International Creative Management](/source/International_Creative_Management) as head of West Coast Operations.[4]

Block founded [Artisan Entertainment](/source/Artisan_Entertainment), an independent film studio that produced films including *[The Blair Witch Project](/source/The_Blair_Witch_Project)*; *[The Buena Vista Social Club](/source/The_Buena_Vista_Social_Club)*; [Darren Aronofsky](/source/Darren_Aronofsky)'s *[Pi](/source/Pi_(film))* and *[Requiem for a Dream](/source/Requiem_for_a_Dream)*; *[The Limey](/source/The_Limey)* directed by [Steven Soderbergh](/source/Steven_Soderbergh); *[The Ninth Gate](/source/The_Ninth_Gate)* starring [Johnny Depp](/source/Johnny_Depp) and directed by [Roman Polanski](/source/Roman_Polanski); and [David Koepp](/source/David_Koepp)'s *[Stir of Echoes](/source/Stir_of_Echoes)* and *[Made](/source/Made_(2001_film))* starring [Jon Favreau](/source/Jon_Favreau) and [Vince Vaughn](/source/Vince_Vaughn).[5][6]

In 2002, Block founded film finance, production and sales company [QED International](/source/QED_International). He was CEO of QED for 12 years, producing films including Neill Blomkamp's *[District 9](/source/District_9)* and *[Elysium](/source/Elysium_(film))*, Oliver Stone's *[W.](/source/W._(film))* and [David Ayer](/source/David_Ayer)'s [WWII](/source/World_War_II) thriller *[Fury](/source/Fury_(2014_film))* starring [Brad Pitt](/source/Brad_Pitt).[7] In 2014, after Media Content Capital took a controlling interest in QED, Block left the company to launch Merced Media with producer Kevin Frakes.[8]

From 2015–17, he was managing director of Bill Block Media, producing the commercially successful *[Bad Moms](/source/Bad_Moms)* starring [Mila Kunis](/source/Mila_Kunis) and [Kristen Bell](/source/Kristen_Bell), and *[Dirty Grandpa](/source/Dirty_Grandpa)* starring [Robert De Niro](/source/Robert_De_Niro) and [Zac Efron](/source/Zac_Efron). In November 2015, he settled a legal dispute with QED, after his former company filed a federal lawsuit alleging trademark infringement and unfair competition concerning the rights to *Dirty Grandpa*.[9]

He was named CEO of [Miramax](/source/Miramax) in April 2017.[7] He left the studio in October 2023 following the lapse of his contract with them, forming another production company, BlockFilm, later that month.[10][11] Producer [Jonathan Glickman](/source/Jonathan_Glickman) subsequently replaced Block as CEO of Miramax on April 2, 2024.[12]

## Personal life

Block lives in the [Hollywood Hills](/source/Hollywood_Hills) with his wife, [Eugenia Kuzmina](/source/Eugenia_Kuzmina), a model, actress and comedian, his two sons and a daughter.[13]
