He was apprenticed to Frank Neal in [Newmarket](/source/Newmarket%2C_Suffolk) but his first flush of success came riding for his brother-in-law, Richard Boyce, whose major owners were Messrs Ladbroke and Shakespeare.{{sfn|Mortimer|Onslow|Willett|1978|p=27}}  For Ladbroke, he won the 1812 [Derby](/source/Epsom_Derby) on [Octavius](/source/Octavius_(horse)).  He also won the 1804 Derby on [Hannibal](/source/Hannibal_(horse)) for [Lord Egremont](/source/George_Wyndham%2C_3rd_Earl_of_Egremont) and the 1814 renewal on [Blucher](/source/Blucher_(horse)) for [Lord Stawell](/source/Henry_Bilson-Legge%2C_2nd_Baron_Stawell).  He won three successive [2,000 Guineas](/source/2%2C000_Guineas) between 1814 and 1816, and won the fillies' [Guineas](/source/1%2C000_Guineas) three times between 1817 and 1832.  By this time in his career, his principal patrons were [Lord George Cavendish](/source/George_Cavendish%2C_1st_Earl_of_Burlington) and the [Marquess of Exeter](/source/Brownlow_Cecil%2C_2nd_Marquess_of_Exeter)

==Riding style and personality==

It is said of Arnull that "lack of tactical skill prevented him from being a great jockey." {{sfn|Mortimer|Onslow|Willett|1978|p=27}}  Nevertheless, he was a "fearless rider, whose strength made him formidable in a finish, and absolutely honest."{{sfn|Mortimer|Onslow|Willett|1978|p=27}}  He was known for being careful with his money and it was said he would go for a week without food if it would earn him a [sovereign](/source/sovereign_(coin)).  This led Newmarket locals to encourage tramps to target him with their begging.  He never became rich as a jockey, and was still riding aged 48.{{sfn|Mortimer|Onslow|Willett|1978|p=27}}

He suffered from [gout](/source/gout) from an early age and it finally killed him on 29 April 1835, just after he had started training for [Lord Lichfield](/source/Thomas_Anson%2C_1st_Earl_of_Lichfield).
