**Biharia** ([Hungarian](/source/Hungarian_language): *Bihar*) is a [commune](/source/Commune_in_Romania) in [Bihor County](/source/Bihor_County), [Crișana](/source/Cri%C8%99ana), [Romania](/source/Romania). It is composed of two villages, Biharia and Cauaceu (*Hegyközkovácsi*).

## History

The village is first mentioned in 1067[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] as Byhor, later as Bychor in 1213[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*], as Bihar in 1332,[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] and again, in 1349 as Byhor.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] The [Gesta Hungarorum](/source/Gesta_Hungarorum), which is believed to have been written around the time of [King Béla III](/source/B%C3%A9la_III_of_Hungary) of [Hungary](/source/History_of_Hungary#Conquest_and_early_principality_(895–1000)) (1172–1196),[3] mentions that [Duke Árpád](/source/%C3%81rp%C3%A1d) (born 845) sent envoys to a castle called Bychor, to [Duke Menumorout](/source/Menumorut).[4]

Biharia has a complex political history, with periods of the [Kingdom of Hungary](/source/Kingdom_of_Hungary), [Eastern Hungarian Kingdom](/source/Eastern_Hungarian_Kingdom), and the [Principality of Transylvania](/source/Principality_of_Transylvania_(1570%E2%80%931711)). With the breakup of [Austria-Hungary](/source/Austria-Hungary) at the end of [World War I](/source/World_War_I) and the ensuing [Hungarian–Romanian War](/source/Hungarian%E2%80%93Romanian_War), the [Romanian Army](/source/Romanian_Land_Forces) entered the village, and after [Treaty of Trianon](/source/Treaty_of_Trianon) of 1920, Biharia became part of the [Kingdom of Romania](/source/Kingdom_of_Romania). During the [interwar period](/source/Interwar_period), it became part of [plasa](/source/Plas%C4%83) Centrală, in [Bihor County](/source/Bihor_County#Historical_county). In the wake of the [Second Vienna Award](/source/Second_Vienna_Award) of August 30, 1940, the territory of [Northern Transylvania](/source/Northern_Transylvania) (of which the town of Biharia was part) reverted to the [Kingdom of Hungary](/source/Kingdom_of_Hungary_(1920%E2%80%931946)). Towards the end of [World War II](/source/World_War_II), the town was taken back from Hungarian and [German](/source/Nazi_Germany) troops by Romanian and [Soviet](/source/Soviet_Union) forces in [October 1944](/source/Romania_in_World_War_II#Campaign_against_the_Axis), during the initial stages of the [Battle of Debrecen](/source/Battle_of_Debrecen).

Following the [administrative reform](/source/Administrative_divisions_of_the_Romanian_People's_Republic) of 1950, the commune became fell in Oradea [Raion](/source/Raion), within [Bihor Region](/source/Bihor_Region) (renamed Oradea Region in 1952 and Crișana Region in 1960). In 1968, the old territorial division into *[județe](/source/Jude%C8%9B)* was reinstituted, and Biharia reverted to being part of Bihor County.
